Ken Spencer Ventriloquist Figure Excellent

spencer pics 11 001

Today it is my pleasure to show you a very nice Ken Spencer figure which has been a member of the Ventriloquist Central collection for a while but I had not yet got him photographed for the web pages until today.

This Spencer figure is another very fine figure which is in very nice original condition not having had any work done on him since he left the hands of Mr Spencer.

This figure has slot jaw, side to side moving eye by way of weight control, each eye also winks and they can blink together and he also has raising eyebrows. His wig is a long wig but it too is original and has never been removed from the head. The original nails are still in place. It unfortunately covers the very nice dish ears.

The paint is original and does have some minor rubs and shows a bit of wear but I would never touch this one. It is just how you like to find them.

He has Ken’s signature upswept pointed nose and ball cheeks. A very nice face indeed.

All the controls on this figure are lever except for the raising eyebrows which has a ring pull. Ken did use a combination of both in his multi function figures.

The height of this figure is 42″ and he has all his original muslin arms and legs and the wood hands are also original. Body is wooden and has Mr Spencer’s typical V shapes ball and socket.

I hope you like seeing this fine Ken Spencer figure.

Front Page News – By Ventriloquist Bob Abdou

Here is an article that ventriloquist Bob Abdou sent in to us back in 2007. It is so good, I thought I would share it with everyone again.

Front Page News

There are many opinions about getting more work, mine is “the more you work the more you get work”. However performing soooo cheap so that everybody hires you is NOT the answer. Having a good show, having a good appearance and having a competitive price is one way to go. Once you have established yourself as a “PRO”, the calls will come…eventually. Some months will be great one year and the next…not so great. Some performers say that the month of January is usually slow, my past January’s have always been good. So there is no real pattern when work will be slow or busy. Just remember the work will come….eventually.

One sure way to get more work is to alert the media. Some newspapers will pass on you and then some will eat you up like juicy fried chicken. I was performing in the deep south part of Texas last week when I made my annual coke and potato chip run before a show at a gas station. ( this is a bad habit but it is a ritual for me ). I am usually early to every show and that gives me time to read the local paper just to see what’s up with the rest of the world. To my surprise I saw a photo on the front section of the paper with my face on it!!

“Hey that’s Me!!” I told the attendant. She smiled and asked why my photo was there. I explained that I was performing for the local libraries in the area and this was a way to promote the show. She was interested and called her family about coming to the library and seeing the show. So promoting works.

Some insight about newspaper stories. When they interview you make sure that your name is spelled correctly. Why??? If anyone wants to “Google” you for future work they won’t be able to find you. If they can write your website in the article, that is just icing on the cake.

With the last name “Abdou” you can imagine how many times that has been misspelled. I go by the stage name “Mr.Puppet” and this just fine with me cause I am easily found by that stage name. Always make sure that they know the right time, day and date of your performance. Most small town newspapers are printed once a week, so get your story in early. Having these town papers promote your show also lets the school, library or whatever you are doing for them see that you really want to get folks to these places.

In today’s world where there are too many other activities to do besides a “puppet show”, we have to make our show “exciting, fun, colorful and different” so that you stir up interest.
Having a story in the paper is just one way to have a great show with a great audience.

Remember a show without an audience is…….a rehearsal!!

Wait Time For Ventriloquist Figures – Frank Marshall

When Ony Carcamo asked his question in response to my blog (click here if you missed the blog) I knew I had to make my response be correct so I contacted my pal Bob Isaacson to find out the correct information about Frank Marshall.

Bob knew Frank for two decades so I knew he would be able to give all of us the correct information.

Here is Bob’s response to me…..

Dan…I read the blog this a.m.,(very good) ..today, (won’t mention names), but as you pointed out, these current figure makers, promise, but don’t deliver. Even when Frank was (“under the weather”) way back in ’62, he took 3 months. After seeing me on a TV show, said I should have a backup duplicate. I made payments in advance & he had it completed in 2 months. My original figure in high school, I believe Frank (again I was making payments) only took a few weeks. He could knock one out in a week if you needed it asap. So, I suppose if you paid Frank right up front for the total cost, you could have the figure in a very short time, again, depending on how busy he was. Hope this helps……..Bob

Thanks, Bob for the insight.

Ken Spencer's Ventriloquist Figure Body

All of the golden era ventriloquist figure builders had their own style body and Ken Spencer was no exception. As a matter of fact Ken’s body was one of the best. It was built like a Sherman Tank comparing it to something of the period.

His body was 13″ tall and the shoulder board itself is 2 inches thick. He made them this thick to accommodate his V shaped socket and neck. The inside of the shoulder board is hand carved out on the underside making a bowl shape.

The body is 8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. His side support boards are actually 1/2 inch thick and then hand carved out to give them a curved shape on the inside. The bottom board is also hand carved and dished out.

The whole front of the body is done with a shaped wooden panel and then the outside of the panel is covered with muslin. The lower inside of the body is supported by a hand carved C shaped brace which is both nailed and glued to the shaped vertical body board.

The arms and legs are attached with both staples and nails and the stuffing in both the arms and legs is straw.

I can tell you that these bodies are as solid a body as you will ever see on a ventriloquist figure.
