Ventriloquist Figures and Realism

When you look at a ventriloquist figure are you looking at a character or a real person? In my opinion you should be looking at a character. Everyone knows that the ventriloquist is having a conversation with himself and therefore the alter ego should be a character and not real.

I have collected enough figures from the golden era to say that back then the makers created characters and the figures did not look like real humans. I agree with that and think this is how a figure should look. If the figure looks to real I believe you lose some of the illusion.

Just a thought from a Ventriloquist Figure collector.

Ventriloquist Masks….Wood?

One of the items I do not have in the Ventriloquist Central Collection is the mask. I guess I have not found one old enough to make me want to purchase it for the collection.

I know that there were law suits a couple decades ago about the use and sale of this ventriloquial item but the fact is that this utility ventriloquist item is OLD. It has been used for nearly a hundred years as far as I can tell.

At one time I had the chance to purchase a talking mask that was wood carved. It was being sold by an auction house and I used a proxy bid for it but unfortunately for me it was sold to a higher bidder that was present at the sale.

I have always regretted that I hadn’t put in a high bid because as of today it is the only one I have ever heard that was for sale. I was the under bidder at a very low price.

I am just curious if any of you, my readers, have ever seen a mask made of wood ?

Ventriloquist Figure Functions

When is it too much? This is something I am asked all the time about functions on ventriloquist figures and this subject certainly has been covered before but since I was asked I thought I would chime in on the subject.

The earliest of figures, knee figures, had more than just the mouth movement. Figures in the 19th century had moving eyes flip wigs and winkers. I have both LeMare figures from England and Shaw and Grannat from the US and these makers are from the 19th century to prove this fact. The working of these added functions on the early figures was there but primitive.

As time marches forward so does the quality of the mechanics. This is seen in the number of functions that were installed by the golden era makers such as Marshall, Spencer and the McElroy Brothers.

Were all of these extra movements beside the mouth needed? Of course not but from the builder’s perspective it was a great way to make more money. The more it does the more it cost. The same is true today. Do the added function mean you will be a better ventriloquist? Of course not but they certainly are a lot of fun to play with.

Edgar Bergen was a master manipulator and his figures Charlie, Mortimer and Effie only had mouth movement and in his hands that is all that was needed for him to bring them to life. Paul Winchell and Jimmy Nelson also in my humble opinion were and are the best ventriloquists and the had figure with minimal functions yet oh how they brought and bring their characters to life.

All the added toys are great but you must be able to find the right material for them to work. Think about this how many times in a routine would you flap the figures ears, cross its eyes or stick out the tongue or flip up its hair? Maybe once and if you were able to come up with a routine to use all those functions I think you may have to be on stage for a few hours.

Well this is my take on multiple functions. You know as a collector the more functions the better but for the performer……well I don’t know.

Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen Letter

A few years ago, Colin Williams from Australia, sent in this email and letter to share with us on Ventriloquist Central.

We have so many new people who visit the website these days and may not have seen this, so I thought it was a good time to show it once again.

Hi Dan,

I am attaching a letter written to me from Edgar Bergen in 1976. You may find it interesting. I don’t want to rehash the ongoing question as to who carved Charlie, however Bergen’s comments are interesting.

I should have said the ‘original’ Charlie. We have all seen the photo of Frank Marshall holding the Charlie heads, which he carved later, and then of course there were the fiberglass models that followed. My conclusion is that Charlie was a stock Mack head which Frank Marshall fashioned to Bergen’s liking.

Thanks again for blog!!!

And thanks, Colin for this great bit of ventriloquial history.

Happy New Year 2011 from Ventriloquist Central

happynewyear

Another year has passed and although the economy is not what it used to be I believe that all of us in the ventriloquist community as a whole have survived very well. Attendance at the Vent Haven ConVENTion was off only slightly showing we all are still very active and want to participate.

And with our Ventriloquist Central Birthday Bash coming this October 8th, we too have already had quite a few sign up to attend. Make sure you do as well.

The Ventriloquist Central Collection has grown a lot faster than I ever imagined it would with both purchases on my part and donations as well. I think it is great that some folks have decided that the Ventriloquist Central Collection is where they want their pal to reside. I hope it continues in the next year on the same pace. That would be great.

Steve Hurst and I have worked diligently at bringing you the best we can in information concerning our great art form but please remember we need YOU to make it happen so any tid bit of information you may have send it in to us and we will get it posted.

PLUS, we have new ideas for the VentriloquistCentral.com website this coming New Year so stay tuned for much, much more.

And from all of us at Ventriloquist Central we wish you and yours a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
