The Original Batmobile and Ventriloquism

Can you believe that the original Batmobile built by George Barris for the 1960’s television series Batman just sold for an astounding 4.2 million dollars. I believe that is a record price for any artifact from a TV show.

Our own Jeff Dunham comedian/ ventriloquist extraordinaire was in attendance for the sale (pictured above). He is an avid Batman collector and I thought he would be the ultimate buyer but that was not the case. It was in fact purchased by a fellow from Arizona who in an interview said he was going to display the car in his living room.

So you are asking what does this have to do with ventriloquism. Good question. I have been thinking about the so called trickle down effect of the pricing. You see there were quite a few of the original style batmobiles that were built. With the sale of the original at such a high number will that cause the replicas to go up in price?

Packing A Ventriloquist Figure for Shipping

From time to time I get asked this question or I hear of a horror story when someone receives a ventriloquist figure that has been destroyed during shipping.

Nothing can take the wind out of your sails faster than when you have purchased a ventriloquist figure and when you open the box you find he has been damaged.

This has happened to me more times than I would like to say and of course going through the battle with the shipping companies is a night mare because they do not want to pay even when insurance has been purchased. It is always the fault of the shippers bad packing. So here is how I pack for shipping and so far I have never had a problem….knock on wood !!!

Bill Nelson’s First Ventriloquist Figure

bill nelson first figure 008

After talking with Bill Nelson and showing him the pictures of this figure Bill was able to confirm to me that this particular figure is quite possibly his number one figure.

Bill went through his photo archive and found a picture of him in his workshop in Richmond Virginia where he is in the process of sculpting heads. The figure you see here is pictured in the sculpting stage in the fore ground of this picture.

Bill sculpted in clay and then the heads were cast in fiberglass. No molds of these figures were made so they are one of a kind. Bill had someone in Richmond do the jaw mechanics and that was the only function in the very first figures.
