Wait Time for Ventriloquist Figures

ventriloquist-figure-wait-time

It seems that in the world of Ventriloquism if you want a figure and order it from any one of a number of makers you are going to have to wait to receive your new buddy. What I would like to ask is what is a “reasonable” amount of time that you should have to wait.

Of course I must make mention that since I work out of the court system the word reasonable is the most litigious word. What may be reasonable for one is not for another.

The first thing I don’t understand is how it can take upwards of 2 years to get what is labeled a stock figure from some makers. There are a couple of makers that I guess I have to call top makers that if you order a figure, give a deposit, and are told 8 to ten weeks, would not the fact that you gave the deposit mean it is a contract and they must deliver in the allotted time? I know this is not the case in our ventriloquial world. This type of contract exists everywhere else.

I feel a maker should never give a time frame if they know in advance that this is not a true statement and can’t deliver, and they should be legally liable if they don’t deliver. It does seem that these builders consider themselves as artist prima donnas and therefore time does not matter, but for the buyer it is very frustrating when you give that hard earned money and then the contact stops no emails or phone call returns. I don’t know of any other profession that gets away with this kind of action.

This has made the fact that the only way to REALLY purchase is on the secondary market. If you see a figure you like on Ventriloquist Marketplace or elsewhere I suggest jumping on it because ordering a new partner will only cause pain and frustration.

Valentine Vox’s I Can See Your Lips Moving

When I reported and showed the Video clip of Valentine Vox’ not long ago, I said it was a promotional video to promote his book (click here to see that blog).

I unfortunately spoke to quickly because Valentine contacted me and let me know that the promo video was in fact a promo for a complete hour documentary on ventriloquism. Not for his book.

I had no idea and told him so. I did ask him if the documentary is available anywhere in its entirety and hopefully he will let me know. When I get that information I will pass it on to you all.

Ventriloquist Figure Raising Eyebrows ala Marshall

I was asked about Frank Marshall’s raising eyebrows and how he was able to make them raise in a horizontal position as compared to the windshield wiper style. I wanted to help so that he could do it in the figure he was building so I am going to describe the mechanism Frank designed to accomplish this effect.

The first thing Frank did was placement of the eyebrow end. It is in the correct position of a human eyebrow. He actually made a vertical slot in which the bend rides for the end wire of the eyebrow. See picture 1.

Then Frank made a bar which has to right angle bends at the ends with a straight throw across the middle. See picture 2

Directly in the middle of the cross bar the control cord is attached and runs down through the head stick and terminated out the front center of same and attached to the lever. See picture 3 and 4.

Pulling on the lever pulls the bar towards the back of the head which on the front of the head causes the brows to rise.

On the left side of the bar is the attachment of a small spring which also attaches to the top of the head. This gives the return of the bar to the correct position. Marshall used 2 tiny pieces of metal rod as stops. See pictures 5 and 6.

I hope this answers all the questions as to how Mr Marshall accomplished his correct eye brow movements.

Are Children Frightened by Ventriloquist Figures

There is a great debate about how children react to ventriloquist figures. Most seem to think that children are frightened by the old style wood carved ventriloquist figures and I have to pipe in with my observations of this past Thanksgiving.

Helen put together a great Thanksgiving dinner and we had 27 guests here which included 4 children ranging in age from 4 to 10. None had been over to the house before so had no clue that they were about to walk into the largest collection of Antique Ventriloquist figures around. Well let me tell you it was a treat.

These kids had never been exposed to them before and they all had a great time. One 4 year old asked their mom if they were alive and the mom told her they were dolls like the ones she has at home. She then wanted to play with them.

I used Happy Hazzard to show the kids what the figures could do and they were memorized. There was not one ounce of fear and they had a great time.

You see the fear has to be nurtured in a child. If the child is told that the figures are scary then they are going to think they are but if the mind of a child isn’t clouded first then they are fine. I also believe that even a soft figure will also scare a child if the child has first been told puppets are scary. They have to learn to be scared. It is not something that is inbred.

Just a recent observation
