Collecting Newer Ventriloquist Figures

I have to touch on the collecting of newer ventriloquist figures because they too can make a very fine collection. New figures make collecting an easy task because they are readily available. There are quite a few makers today that create some very fine dummies made out of many different materials and with all the same type facial movements of the old style figures.

One of the builders today that is making giant waves with the ventriloquist community is Dan Payes. Dan is an all in one creator in that he does everything in the production of his figures. He makes the clay sculptures, makes his own molds, does all the casting, builds the bodies, does all the mechanics and does the complete painting. He creates a multitude of original characters and always seems to be pushing the envelope.

Dan Payes’ ventriloquist figures are much more in demand than they used to be, and for good reason.

Dan’s out of the box thinking, off the wall designs and remarkably low prices have put him in a category all his own. Dan’s figures are not your typical “cheeky boy”, though he does offer the classic looking dummy if you so desire. His designs are more geared to extreme character types, and some are simply indescribable (in a good way). This is what makes him stand out in a self made class all his own, and the performer can benefit from this as well by standing out on stage.

Dan started making dummies in the late 90’s before the internet created several fly by night dummy makers. The first design was “Preston”. And it was so inexpensive we won’t mention the price here. That design was taken to the limit as far as a molded figures go. And the design was retired a few years ago. But it put Dan on the map, and many people followed his career as a figure maker since then. “Preston will always be a favorite of mine”, Said Dan in a recent interview. “I sculpted him based on a scary clown doll I own from Argentina”.

Dan’s designs only got more elaborate and really pushed the envelope from there. “A Cyclops, a Siamese twin, an atomic mutant, a hot rod monster, I’m sure there’s more I just can’t think of them right now”, said Dan when we asked about the weirdest ones he’s made. Dan’s figures are also attractive as collectables because of the medium in which he has chosen to create them. We asked about this and Dan said,” I love mannequin composition, it allows me to create the way out stuff without worrying about them falling apart or cracking. I also like mannequin composition because it’s as old school as you’re gonna get for making more than one figure besides using wood. The paint doesn’t chip off either. I also think I’m the only figure maker to have taken mannequin composition to the limit of its abilities. But don’t hold me to that, the last thing I need is another challenge! “

Dan may also be the only figure maker to offer a lifetime warranty! “They rarely break”, says Dan, “I figured a life time warranty should be standard. Of course, I can’t cover repairs if they run them over with a truck! I think I only had to honor the warranty 2 or 3 times in a decade, and one for sure was due to shipping damage”.

Dan has scaled back the amount of requests he accepts for making a dummy. “I just don’t have much time anymore”.., says Dan, “I’d like to strictly build dummies, but It will probably always remain a hobby for me. But I don’t see me stopping cold turkey. There’s way to many ideas in my head for me to stop”. Well, we are happy to hear he won’t be stopping anytime soon. A figure maker like Dan doesn’t hit the scene too often.

There are a few people out there that already have quite a collection of Dan’s figures so go to his web site www.danpayespuppetry.com and take a look and I think you will enjoy what you see. Especially the price.

We just hope he stays around the hobby for many years to come, there’s no telling what he’ll come up with next!

Happy Hanukkah From Ventriloquist Central

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Jewish friends out there a very Happy Hanukkah. Today is the first day of an eight day celebration honoring the oil which lasted in the temple for 8 days when it was only supposed to last for one.

Since this is the gift giving holiday, I expect to receive a different ventriloquist figure every day for the next eight.

Hey I can wish can’t I??

Jeff Dunham Got Me Out of a Speeding Ticket!

This was sent to me by Chuck Field and I thought I would share it with everyone:

Hi Dan,
The first weekend of December had me performing in Milwaukee, Chicago and finally Indianapolis.
At about 10pm with 10 minutes left traveling on I-465 going 60 on a 55 speed limit, I was pulled over by a State Trooper.
When I opened the window, the policeman asked me for my license, proof of insurance and registration.
I asked why I was pulled over and he told me I was going 70mph. After I told him, that I was aware that I was over 55 but knew
I was going 60, he was a little annoyed and asked, “What brings you to Indianapolis sir”.
I answered…I am a Ventriloquist and have performances on Sunday.
With that, a big smile came over his face and said, “TRYING TO MAKE IT BIG LIKE JEFF DUNHAM EH”?
I answered, “Its a little to late for that” but I started doing this since age 10 and am still pretty busy.”
I also said, “SILENCE” and he laughed and handed me back my license and said,
“Don’t go over 55 and have some great shows tomorrow”.
THANK YOU JEFF!

Bow Ties and Ventriloquist Figures

I was pondering the fact that most ventriloquist figures are very well dressed and wear bow ties. I started to think about this because most of the ventriloquist figures of the past, and I mean pre 1960, you will find are dressed in suits with dress shirts and bow ties. This is of course not written in stone but a good 80% of the figures which I have found that are in original costuming are dressed this way.

Jerry Mahoney and Danny O’Day are both pictured with bow ties and maybe because of their popularity this may have prompted the use of the bow tie. Then again I just checked out the pictures in both Theo Mack’s Vent figure catalogue and Frank Marshall’s catalogue and all the male figures are pictured with bow ties.

I have managed to put together a collection of about 200 antique clip on bow ties over the years and have fun changing ties every so often. It is amazing but the difference in colors and size will create a different look. I do enjoy finding and then clothing the figures in Ventriloquist Central Collection and for me the bow tie is an important feature.

My Favorite Ventriloquist Figure

As I peruse the Ventriloquist Central Collection I ask myself over and over again which figure would I consider my favorite. This is a very hard choice to make because all of the figures are special to me or they would not be part of the collection.

Now if you asked what maker is my favorite I of course will answer Frank Marshall but there are figures in the collection that were made by Mr Marshall that I would certainly place way down on the list of favorite figures even though I love them.

Of course everyone who knows about Ventriloquist figures and makers says to me “Oh you must love your McElroy figures!” And while that is true I love them I again am asking if one of them is my favorite figure?!

The past 2 days we posted about Ken Spencer and there are seven of his creations in the Ventriloquist Central Collection. His creations are really great because they certainly say “Dummy” and in no way make you think they are a real person but in the right hands they become animated Cartoon style characters. They are Sooooo cool.

Well I guess I must choose a figure I like best and I think I have to admit as I walk back and forth through the collection the one figure that keeps pulling me in is the figure used by Johnny Main called Archie. He has such a great face and is a loaded Frank Marshall creation and he just makes me feel great when I pick him up and hold his control post. I guess I have to say he is my favorite….well today!!
