Who Is This Week's Mystery Ventriloquist

Last week’s mystery ventriloquist was fun. This vent was a bit more obscure but not too obscure that it fooled George Boosey.

It was Lester Marshall Jr. a great performer back in the day and his Marshall figure is in the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure on eBay, A Record??

Before I get started with the subject of today’s blog, I just wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate all the great moms out there – it really is the toughest job in the world.

Happy Mother’s Day from Ventriloquist Central.

Over the past week and a half, while the Frank Marshall figure was on eBay, I received many emails from folks wanting to know particulars about this figure.

I hesitated in writing back to anyone as well as not writing into the Worldvents about the figure because I did not want to jeopardize the sale for the listing person. I don’t think that it would have been very fair of me to have done that to him or her.

With that being said here are my thoughts on the figure after the sale. I have to take my hat off to the buyer because they paid an astounding price for a figure that had so many problems.

I read the few comments that were posted on Worldvents when this figure was first listed and one person said it needed work. Another said it should be left original but I don’t think he really looked at the pictures because there was nothing left that was original other than the wood head was carved by Marshall and the eyes were original and the leather winkers (maybe) but you could not tell as they were not pictured closed.

The paint was totally redone and then touched up again. The eyebrows were more than likely added to the figure by Finis Robinson. He used to cover the brows with hair like these (I used to have a Finis with this exact type of eyebrows).

The lever was a brass lever screwed to the bottom of the head stick which was certainly not done by Frank Marshall. Also the shape of the brows and how they were attached were nothing like how Frank did them.

The other levers were worked on and you could clearly see one had been replaced. The inside pictures of the head showed the globs of wood dough that had been added, slopped on and the block of wood across the top. Not the work of Frank Marshall

The body looked like the top board may have been replaced. The flat section on the top where the socket hole was certainly a typical for Marshall bodies.

The name on the bottom board of the body was impressed (I have never seen that done) all the bodies in the Ventriloquist Central Collection have a purple rubber stamping of the name. The legs had joints in the knees suggesting that they may have been wooden. Frank certainly did that but it was on his walking figures and this was a knee figure. This leads me to believe the legs were not original.

As a collector of Marshall’s work, I prefer originality. However, I liked the figure but believe there will be others that will be much better to come along.

Frank Marshall Duplicarver Head

duplicarver-head

I have been asked by many people about this Frank Marshall duplicarver head which was listed for sale on Ebay this past week.

I can let everyone know that this was in fact a head made by Frank Marshall and he used it to make heads that were similar to Charlie McCarthy but it is NOT the head that was used to make the original Charlie McCarthy figure.

If you study the face you can see that there are many facets that are similar but many that are quite different.

This head was a gift to Brian Hamilton from Frank’s sister Mae after Frank passed away. Brian actually got most of Frank’s workshop which included tools as well as incomplete parts many of which are now part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection as well as the Vent Haven museum.

This head has passed through a couple other collections since Brian Hamilton and it was nice to see it surface again for sale.

I wish it was part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection but in my professional opinion the price was too high.

Pete Michaels on Ventriloquist Central Blog Talk Radio

Ventriloquist Pete Michaels on BlogTalkRadio

I am so excited to be able to announce to everyone that professional ventriloquist Pete Michaels will be our guest on Ventriloquist Central Blog Talk Radio.

Pete first appeared on stage at the tender age of five. His fascination with music, comedy, puppets and ventriloquism also began as a child; with his influences being Edgar Bergen, Paul Winchell and Jimmy Nelson.

He continued performing during his high school years, often playing the musical comedy leads. An alumnus of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, he furthered his acting studies with Weist-Barron and studied voice with Robert Marks.

He developed his talents further by showcasing his comedy and ventriloquism at numerous venues. Pete continued to perform in Comedy Clubs and on Cruise Ships, quickly gaining wide acclaim and was soon a regular at the world famous Apollo Theater with his black puppet pal; Woody D.

The duo performed dozens of television shows, concerts and special events at the landmark venue. With major TV and Film credits like: Dummy; with Oscar winner Adrien Brody; Late Night with Conan O’Brien; Showtime At The Apollo; Canada’s: Comedy At Club 54; Uptown Comedy Club; Comedy Central; Let’s Laugh with Sherman Hemsley, and many others– It’s no wonder why Pete Michaels is one of the most IN DEMAND performers today!

Pete has been a driving ventriloquial force in the Northeast part of the country for a couple decades and certainly can answer most any question you could possibly have concerning this great art form.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 20th, 6pm Eastern (5pm Central & 3pm Pacific).

If you’re not going to be able to listen to the show live please send in questions for Pete and I’ll be glad to ask them for you.

Be sure to tune in and listen to this show. You won’t be sorry.
