Ken Spencer Walking Ventriloquist Figure Redone

I purchased this Ken Spencer walking figure from the Bill Boley collection quite a number of years ago just after Bill passed away.

It came to me as Bill had him in some very ratty clothing and the face had been repainted but not detailed. He remained this way until yesterday when I decided to give him his finishing touches and redress him.

The end result is he now looks they way Ken Spencer painted his figures and the new suit I think looks great.

The blending of the face paint and the details were what took the time. Ken Spencer painted the lines and eyelashes on his figures and they were not the quality of work done by Marshall but were very distinctive.

If you look at the other Spencer figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection which are all original you will see I captured Ken’s style with this walking figure. I hope you agree with me that he is now much nicer to look at!!

Ventriloquist Central Collection Series – Conrad Hartz's Mandarin Head in a Box

hartz-head-box-009S

Conrad Hartz as we all know has created some very fine ventriloquist figures over the years and they have that superb vintage feel and look being that they are all each carved by hand in basswood and hand painted. Many of Conrad’s figures are done in the Marshall style and he has captured that look.

Conrad also made some very fine novelty items and one of them is the Mandarin head in the box. The head is also carved basswood and painted to perfection.

I am sure you will agree Conrad knows his way around a piece of basswood with a carving knife.

New Ceiling at Ventriloquist Central Collection

I have always professed you need the right tool for the job and so it is true you need the right worker for the particular job.

I hired this fellow Franklin to do the repair of the ceiling and I must admit he is a great plasterer. He cut out more of the ceiling then cut and hung new plaster board and then re plastered the entire ceiling to match the existing ceiling in the other room.

He did a spectacular job and now you would never know that anything had happened to my ceiling.

I also asked Franklin if he worked in the circus because he is an expert at walking on stilts.

Information From Ventriloquist Marcelo Melison

Back weeks ago our good friend Marcelo Melison sent in a great story about a Spanish Ventriloquist named Francisco Sanz. This great story was accompanied by some wonderful pictures of the walking figure he used which was made to life like extremes.

We have so much information that comes in to us here at Ventriloquist Central that I just can’t always post as soon as we receive it but I know all you readers are going to enjoy seeing what Marcelo sent in to us for you all to see.

Hello Dan:
I’m sharing something with you, it can even interest the readers of your blog. There was a famous spanish ventriloquist named Francisco Sanz. I knew about him because in my research on ventriloquism history in Argentina I found out that about one hundred years ago he visited the variety stages of my country. In his time, he was the greatest, very famous and popular, he even made some records with his different characters. The thing is that last year his family donated some of his figures to a puppet museum in Spain, and they were restoring them for exhibition. Here are some photos of that process. Remember that at that time, european ventriloquists were looking for “the perfect dummy”, as realistic as possible. The heads are more or less the standard type, but the body is really amazing… Most of these figures were standing and walking ones, and the incredible thing is the steel spring coil joining the upper torso to the hip section, I’m assuming the figure was able to move his shoulder section up and down, front and back… A very interesting animation, don’t you think?
Best wishes from Marcelo Melison.
