Completed My First Basswood Ventriloquist Figure

Noah contacted me a while back and I tried to help him as best I could with email and I think he really did rather well as you will see from the following!!

untitled01

Mr. Willinger, my name is Noah Longoria awhile back I emailed you asking about mouth gapping on wooden figures. I ended up using the whole cut out jaw piece and carved the tongue into it instead of building a box. I took the advice you all gave on how Frank Marshall filled the gap with business cards but I used thin sheets of basswood. I wanted to make a basswood figure and used the little bit of info in Paul Winchell’s book I laminated a block of wood to the dimensions in Winchell’s book bought two carving knives and went to work on my new project. I ended up with a drunk type figure I really liked and wished I would have taken pictures of. Well I worked past the point of fatigue like I have a tendency to do and ruined the back of the head not knowing at the time it could of been fixed. I abandoned the project bought Brose’s book, Claasen’s book, a Brose kit and enough tools to get by, built the kit learned a few things, ordered another kit, bought more tools, pulled out the original basswood head carved a cyclops face into it, and made something that worked instead of throwing it out. I have seen pics of the inside of some basswood figures now and have a better understanding of how they are made this will make things a lot easier hollowing out a solid block of wood to install mechanics with hand tools is not fun. I’m including pics. Cyclops head in a cage he has moving eye, slot jaw, and flapping ears. Thank you for helping me through email and all the information at Ventriloquist Central.

Ventriloquist Paul Winchell and Frank Merklein

I received the following email from Frank Merklein:

Dan, I was a cameraman at NBC NY beginnin Feb 1948.I would like to send you a photo taken of Paul Winchell,Jerry and myself during a break in live show.
Frank

Here was my response:

Frank,
Please send me pictures and of course any story you would like to write which I can share with all that visit Ventriloquist Central. It would be greatly appreciated.
Dan

To my delight this was Frank’s response:

winchellmahoney48

Dan,
This is the single photo I have of the show,It came from Studio G which was especially built for Toscanini.I was assigned to his program as well. Paul was a pleasure to work with over the few seasons he was on NBC. We moved to Studio 3B for his solo show after they dropped Dunninger. Paul embraced the audience and even integrated the crew into his routines. He was a year older than me.

We even addressed Jerry Mahoney in giving directions “Look left”,”Move your leg”,etc..I did the Howdy Doody program as well …talked to Howdy and even Shari Lewis with Lamb Chop (actually a sock over her hand)..Well it was better than talking to one’s self… Besides on the Winchell show we earned $48 weekly….Not bad after 4 years of war, then finishing school on $20 wk for over a year.

It is sad that we never communicated after Paul went west.I never did send him the photo and cannot recall if Jack made a copy for him at the time. Thanks for letting me reminisce.

PS..As a 14 year old I even tried my hand as a ventriloquist. My father worked in Fox Theaters. He brought home a Charlie McCarthy a full size promo piece ,for me.The interest faded, once the hormones kicked in.
Did you ever wonder how a ventriloquist could become a hit on radio?.

Enjoy the picture.

Thanks, Frank

Frank, thanks so much for sharing this wonderful story with us at Ventriloquist Central.

Incomplete Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Head

incomplete marshall head-001S

I thought everyone would love seeing a Frank Marshall head that was underway but actually never was finished.

This head started out life as a Tommy Knots head but it was in the process of being re carved. It is all wood carved with an application of wood dough over it to do some changes. As you can see from the pictures the right ear was quite close to being completed but the left side had not yet been done.

This head was part of a treasure trove of items that was acquired by Brian Hamilton from Frank Marshall’s sister May after Frank had passed away. I am not sure if the redo was being done by Brian or Frank himself but it sure was going to be a fine face.

Recent purchases is causing me to possibly part with this great piece of vent figure building history so if you are interested contact me.

In any case I hope you enjoy looking at this great Frank Marshall head.
