An Old But Cute Ventriloquism Poem

I was reading an issue of the Oracle Magazine from July-August 1960 and came upon this poem written by Charles S. Berger and I thought I would share it with you all.

The Dummy

My face is roughed and full of life
I have no aches, no pains
I’m free from all this earthly strife
That follows the struggle for gains

I never get sick, and I never fear
For want of nourishing food
I never vex nor shed a tear
For I’m always a happy dude.

I never sleep and I never cry
I’m bright as the star of eve
I never live I never die
In this land of Make-Believe.

I fear no words–no reprimands
I like to entertain
I may be saucy as occasion demands
Although it’s not my aim.

I know I’m tough, I know I’m red
But nothing can I do
Unless it comes from his head
And given by him to you.

I had forgotten all about this one, used to use it in act with Little Willie 18″ Marshall figure all the time.

When I did poem half century ago had added:

      (beginning verse)
I’m just a little wooden figure
Though I’m natty and I’m neat,
      I don’t cost a dime for lodging
      Nor for anything I eat

      (and ending verses)
You can’t blame me for anything
That I may say or do.
I never say a single word
Unless this guy has me to.

So when I say something not very nice,
Think about it once or twice
Everything I say comes from this guy’s head
He {turns around} makes my head move too.
