PLEASE You MUST Be Careful

It is so troubling that scammers are out there trying to take advantage of people in these very hard times but this has always taken place and always will.

Today I received two emails from a person wanting to purchase two different items from my Ventriloquist Marketplace ads. As soon as I read them I was suspect because he used terrible grammar and misspelled words and then also asked me to send him pictures of the items in question. I always put enough pictures on the ad to show a perspective buyer exactly what the item is without needing to ask any questions.

This person also asked in his emails for me to provide my contact information. I then reversed the situation and emailed saying I needed all his pertinent information for shipping and packing and insurance and that I also would only accept payment by PayPal. His response was that he wanted to pay by money order. Never did send his information. I again replied PAYPAL only. He returned saying his PayPal account had problems. I replied “SORRY…. No more emails.

I received an email this evening from another seller on the Ventriloquist Marketplace who received the same type of email from the same person. I let him also know this exact story but I wanted everyone to know that if you have something on the Ventriloquist Marketplace to be aware of this and you must always be very cautious with online sales. If it feels wrong IT IS !!!

Also if you receive a money order for more that the price you are asking it is for sure a scam. Never cash a check (money order) made out for more with the request that you send back the difference. Your bank will clear the funds to you then 2 or 3 weeks later the check bounces and you are stuck having to repay the bank.

So BE CAREFUL !!!

Old Man Winter Hit Me !!

Living in Boston is a wonderful thing if you love the seasonal changes because we have everything. Included is the fact that sometimes we do get buried with snow in the winter.

The total amount of snowfall on average for Boston is around 38″ and we have already surpassed that this season and the heaviest snow fall time is just starting. Boston usual gets hit hardest from Jan 20 to Feb 15th according to the meteorologists. Well I am really tired of it this year.

Yesterday, Jan 18th, the snow started falling at 6:45am here in sunny Malden, a suburb about 6 miles north of Boston . It didn’t stop snowing until around 5PM.

At that time outside my back door I stuck a ruler into the snow and it was 11″ deep. Now the TV stations reported that Boston had between 6 and 8 inches. Not so here. At about 10:00 PM it started snowing again and this morning I used a yardstick and it was now 17″ deep. So now the work begins.

As a youth I loved to grab my shovel and go out and earn a few dollars helping the neighbors shovel but those days seem to have passed. I asked the young boy that lives across the road what he would want to shovel out my front and back steps and he said” He Mr Willinger that is a big job, I want $85.00″ a very enterprising kid. I passed on his offer and have just come inside after shoveling myself.

Here are some pictures of today’s snow fall with my walks shoveled and around my car. The driveway still has yet to be done. That’s Old Man Winter!!!

Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff Arms

Last week N Jay from “N Jay n Joey” asked a question about Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff’s arms. He wanted to know how and who made them move.

I answered him and also posted on Worldvents that I had done a blog back on March 18th 2008 on just this subject and showed pictures of Jay Lloyd doing same. Click here to see the blog

Yesterday, I received this note from Mike Brose adding a bit more information that I did not previously have so I decided to share this with the vent community.

Hey Dan,

There was also Skip Ludwig, shown in the attached photo with Jay and
Paul’s wife at the time. I always remember their names, as I used to
recall the credits on the Winchell Mahoney show out KTTV in Los Angeles
near where I lived growing up.

There were usually the two operators (Jay and Skip), who would operate the head with one hand and be one of the figure’s hands with their other hand. One operator did Jerry, and one did Knuck. The other hand on the figure would be a stuffed glove. But sometimes, when they needed both
hands to be active on the figures (see other attached photo) a third
person was used to operate just heads. Many times, this third person was Paul himself, when he did not need to be seen on camera the same time as the figures. This way he could operate the head and mouths on the figures, and do the voices too, and would have the best synch on the mouth movement.

Best Regards,

Mike Brose

ventriloquist-bill-hume-and-rosita

I was reading in my early ventriloquism magazines today and in the 1948 Christmas issue of the Grapevine News I found this very nice article about a ventriloquist named Bill Hume. He created his own ventriloquist figures carved out of wood and…….well read the article it is really very nice. Continue reading
