Ventriloquist Figure Video Collecting Series – A Brian Hamilton Wood Carved Figure

Brian Hamilton was a flash in the pan so to speak, as far as figure makers are concerned. He started at the age of 14 and at 15 he was making carved wood figures in the Marshall style. Unfortunately passed away at the early age of 28 on April 10, 1988. He was such an accomplished builder that he actually acquired all of Frank Marshall’s tools to do his work.

He carved heads out of wood and then went on to build figures out of Fiberglass. The McElroy brothers George & Glen took Brian under their wing and taught him a lot of their techniques in building figures and he made some very fine McElroy style figures of which there is less than a handful known. He also did repair work too. We can wonder what would have been had he still been alive and building today.

The New Hand Held Ventriloquist dummy

I received a very interesting email from Dan Leighly because of his watching my video about the Insull Pocket figures (Click here to see video).

It seems he was web surfing and came across this web site www.ezone.com and this site sells an Ipod unit that is a pocket ventriloquist. It closes it’s eyes to go to sleep and when you touch it his eyes reopen. His eyebrows raise, his eyes move back and forth and his mouth moves. If you shake him he is programmed with his own sayings. This is a very clever device. I believe that anyone who is into ventriloquism will love this. I wish I had invented it!!

W.S. Berger & Len Insull

My Idol in ventriloquism is W.S. Berger. I give him credit for having the fore sight to see the value of ventriloquist figures before they were a collectible item in any sense of the word collectible. They were used props which to anyone other than he were valueless.

He was able to purchase figures directly from the great makers of the early 20th century for the asking prices they sold to any one else that was buying a figure. He purchased Jacko from the McElroy Brothers for $125.00 and was able to actually make monthly payments to them for the purchase. How great was that??

But he was a business man too and not only did he buy but he also sold. In the issues of the Oracle magazine in the 1950’s he often put in adds with a list of books and figures for sale. He also made a deal with Len Insull to sell figures from his workshop. I recently acquired an original ad that W.S. Berger put out offering Len Insull Toby Jugs and Pocket Figures for sale. Even though he offered these items for sale it seems that not many were sold because Len Insull only made 50 Toby Jugs and only 16 pocket figures. How many could he have sold??

I have pictured this great ad for you to see and also here are photos of an original Toby Jug and 2 of the Pocket figures.

Phony Purchases…Not Kid Stuff!

I have tried my hardest to keep Ventriloquist Central as a friendly place with a joyous atmosphere for anyone who wants to be involved with ventriloquism and wants to learn and be kept up to date with all things ventriloquile and I think I have accomplished this goal.

But every once in a while a problematic situation arises and I just felt I had to let this out since I was not the only one involved.

I am not going to mention any names because I do not want to have any recourse against me but I must impart this information to everyone because this has happened to me and to a few others that are collectors in the vent community.

I was contacted last spring by a young person who initially appeared to have a very strong liking for the old figures and wanted to learn as much as they could. I love this and was willing to share with them all I could.

They then started asking if I was willing to sell my McElroy and Marshall figures. Of course they are not for sale so this person asked what I would sell. I gave them a choice of a few figures and they chose one they wanted.

Here is where it gets real good. This person’s mother called me and verified with me that she was purchasing the figure from me for her child and we agreed on a price and she would send the deposit. I never received the deposit.

Of course she and her child came up with every excuse in the book but needless to say nothing ever arrived in my mail box.

Next I get emails from another youngster just before the holidays and the same type of action began. Boy, this seems familiar. I was dumbfounded that there would be a second kid doing the same thing. The first youngster was all over all the vent lists but I am not sure about the second.

I was contacted by a good friend of mine Chef Jim Willard because he had made a deal for selling his Figures and he just told me that he has been waiting over a month for the deposit and he too did not receive it. Sounds just like my situation.

So to sum up there is either one or maybe two out there that are causing people to think they have sold vent figures when in fact it is not true. Remember never send anything out unless you have payment in your hand and never think that you have made a sale until said payment is in your hand.

If anyone else out there has had contact with these supposed buyers and wants to leave a comment PLEASE do because I want everyone to be aware of how far it has gone.
