Clothing For The Ventriloquist Figure

I love to dress dummies in period clothing appropriate to the age of the figure. I have found that many times at yard sales you will have boxes of children’s clothing to look through and granted much of the clothing is not usable but every now and again a great jacket or shirt or great kids bow ties will show up.

The shoes I find to be the hardest of all to find. Most of the time shoes are in such poor condition that they are not worth purchasing because they will not add to the figures look.

I was fortunate one summer to find out about a shoe store that was going out of business. I asked if they had any children’s shoes that were on the older side. To my surprise and luck I was able to purchase a large stock of fantastic children’s leather shoes from the 1950’s and early 60’s that are just great. So you just never can tell what you will find. If you need a pair give me an email!! LOL

As a fan of Frank Marshall figures I have studied his choice of clothing and he seemed to gravitate to the style of two toned suit jackets. Today they call this rock-a-billy but I am not sure that is what it was called back in the 50’s.

These type suit jackets with matching pants were usually done in cotton or gabardine and really do fit his characters looks. Jerry Mahoney wore this style suit jacket so the most popular character of the 50’s generation was a rock-a-billy. These suits are nearly impossible to find but every once in a while they will turn up.

Take a look at the Marshall figures and you will see a variety of these jackets on the dummies of the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

W.S. Berger – Fred Russell and Coster Joe

Coster Joe and Fred Russell

Fred Russell was a pioneer for ventriloquists. While reading the September-October, 1952 issue of “The Oracle”, I found this great article about Fred Russell that was written by W.S. Berger. I thought you might enjoy reading this wonderful article.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
By W. S. BERGER

Brother Fred Russell (Thomas Frederick Parnell) was born in London England on September 29, 1862, and this article is written on his 90th birthday September 29, 1952. The IBV members extend to him every good wish and many happy returns of the day.

Fred Russell’s first stage appearance was in 1879, and that was when he was 17 years old. In 1882 he took up journalism as a profession with the HACKNEY and KINGSLAND GAZETTE. He studied ventriloquism under the able direction of the famous FREDRIC MACCABE, and made his first appearance on the concert stage in London in 1886. He then made his debut on the music hall stage at the Palace Theatre in London in 1896. In 1898 he published his book entitled “Ventriloquism and Kindred Arts,” which had a wide circulation,
and is now a collectors’ item. Various editions followed the original work. His act was standard for 35 years, and Bro. Russell played every music hall of note in England and performed in Australia, Africa, New Zealand, Ceylon, and in America in 1905.

One of the outstanding acts produced by Bro. Russell during his colorful career was in 1922 when he introduced his elaborate and intricate ventriloquial production, “Sylvester Vs. Fitzcholmondeley” in “Breach of Promise,” a ventriloquial farce involving a damage suit for 5,000 pounds for failure of the Defendant to marry the Plaintiff. The court scene represented a fairly accurate English Court. It required one year of continuous practice with embellishments before the first performance at L1. Ford Hippodrome, London, in 1923. The production was sensational and had a continuous run for almost three years. The actors in the cast were: Judge in wig and robe; the Jury of 12 men; the Defendant, a “Dude” in the dock; defense counsel; FRED RUSSELL, counsel for the Plaintiff; Plaintiff, Mrs. Russell; policeman acting as usher; two witnesses; and “COSTER JOE” as page boy. The actors were made by Bro. Russell from clay models and then finished in paper mache and painted and costumed by him and his wife.

The operation of the actors was pneumatically controlled by the feet from a sort of switchboard under the feet of Bro. Russell. He was assisted by Gladys (Charming wife of Fred Russell) and a stage hand to set the props. To promote increased public interest in the show, a Cpage pamphlet, giving a synopsis of the court proceedings and dialog, was distributed by the thousands at the Music Halls a week prior to the opening dates.

Later on, two more actors were added to the cast, the plaintiff’s landlady and baby, making 21 characters to control, and what a job that was as compared with the performance of this day! There is a foto of the court scene gracing the walls of the Vent Haven, bearing the autograph of Bro. Fred Russell.

At the time Fred Russell started his ventriloquial career, the performers then employed groups of mechanical figures ranging from three to ten. Bro. Russell changed this procedure. He was the pioneer of the modern method on the music hall stage, of performing a complete show with “Coster Joe” alone. Bro. Russell was the first President of the Variety Artists Federation in London and is a life member in the International Brotherhood of Ventriloquists, and “Coster Joe” is a life member in the Brotherhood of ventriloquists Dummies.

The picture which adorns the cover (above) was taken at the time Bro. Russell made his Television appearance in London, January 19, 1952. For the various contributions that Bro. Russell has made to ventriloquism, we are indeed grateful.

Greg Lemon a friend of Cy Leonard's

I was pleasantly surprised with a great email I received from Greg Lemon. I thought his email to me was so nice that I asked him if I could share it with all of my readers on Ventriloquist Central and said I could. So here it is…

“I found your tribute online to Cy Leonard from happy. Have to say it was touching. I knew Cy most of my life. He was friends with my dad. They shared a common interest in computers. I first met Cy when I was very young and he was giving me all sorts of games to play. As I got older I was invited by him to be on his BBS called Cy’s swap shop.I was a member there til god, the internet came out I suppose.. Then we sort of lost touch. I may have written him the odd time here and there, but I do know the final time I spoke to him was 3 years ago. I found his current website at the time and emailed him and we talked about old times. He also told me he was going for checkups with the doctor and at the time he didn’t know what was wrong with him, but he was having problems remembering stuff from email to email. That was the last time I spoke to him. I just found out last night that he passed away almost a year ago. needless to say, it kinda hit me. He was a great man. a very great man.. as sad as I am to hear he’s gone, I feel lucky I did write him when I did. I just wish I sent a card to him when he was in the home a couple years ago.. anyways. I’m glad to see happy is with a new owner.. I take it you knew Cy quite well. Is he resting in toronto? i was kinda hoping I could maybe go pay my respects.”

Paul Winchell Mask Puppet – Oswald

winchell-oswald-1

winchell-oswald-2

As we all know Paul Winchell was a great inventor as well as ventriloquist. And the following pictures show you that he made every effort to protect his ideas. These are the drawings that he used to secure his patent for the Oswald mask.

He was granted patent # 3,129,001 in 1964 for an “inverted novelty mask”.

I found these to be soooo interesting to look at and I thought you all would love to see them as well.

Frank Marshall Figures on Ebay

In the past month or so there have been some very nice antique figures that have been listed and sold on ebay. Two of them were Frank Marshall figures.

The first was one that the seller tried to compare to a Nosey ( NOT ) but it did sell for over $2300.00 and the the next was a very unusual face which sold for just over $1250.00.

I received many emails from all kinds of people wanting to know everything from , am I going to buy them to what do I think they are worth. I feel very privileged to be the one that everyone goes to, to find out this kind of information. I try to answer everyone as quickly and honestly as I possibly can.

I decided the first figure, which the seller compared to a nosey, was a face that I already had a couple very close examples of so I did not bid. I will say if I didn’t already have figures of kind, I would have pushed the price.

The second one which sold for just over $1250.00 I was actually the under bidder. It had a different face but was in need of a lot of restoration work so I decided what I would spend and put in my bid. I figured that if I got him great and if not I bid enough.

I was not overly upset at not wining because in recent days I have purchased two Mack figures a Ken Spencer Figure and another Marshall figure so not only was the price enough but my funds were low.

As much as I would like to purchase everything I just can’t but rest assure I see everything that is out there for sale.
