Ventriloquist Figure Maker, Ray Guyll and the Cherchers

The Cherchers – Ray Guyll has the saxophone

Ventriloquist figure maker Ray Guyll is a man of many talents. Most know him for his great skill at building and restoring ventriloquist figures. As you know he’s restored quite a few figures for the Ventriloquist Central Collection and I’ve always been pleased with his work. In fact, Ray’s even done restoration work for Vent Haven.

In 2006 at the Vent Haven ConVENTion, Ray introduced me to Steve, the webmaster, and Ray was instrumental in helping us come up with ideas that led up to Ventriloquist Central.

Ray’s other talent is music. He’s a very accomplished musician and teaches music. Yesterday, there was a great article about Ray and the band he was with back in the late 50’s early 60’s called the Cherchers. The picture above is Ray with that band (thanks Steve for providing the picture).

Frank Marshall Letter to Ventriloquist Johnny Main

marshall letr

I was searching through some of my archives of original letters that were written by Frank Marshall and found this one addressed to Johnny Main.

He apologizes to Johnny for his tardiness in shipping but also states that he is a one man operation. Some have said in the past that Frank had multiple works, so I guess this dispels that notion.

We Get Mail – A Reader Asks…

Hi, I remember watching a show on Comedy Central where the performer had a hand puppet and took him apart on stage (a turtle I think) and then he started singing “I ain’t got no body”. I think the performer was having an argument with him and took him apart. Who was the puppet and performer?

Brad

If you know who this might be, please leave a comment to help out Brad.

John Schaibley's First Ventriloquist Figure

schaibley-011S

Not too long ago I was happy to present a very rare Louis Grannat figure which I acquired for the Ventriloquist Central Collection. If you didn’t see him click here.

Today I am happy to present my second Louis Grannat figure which has a wonderful provenance to accompany same. This was John Schaibley’s very first ventriloquist figure which he purchased sometime around 1915 when he was a lad of about 15. He of course went on to use both Mack and Marshall figures but this was his first.

Along with this figure I am happy to show 10 small diaries that Mr Schaibley (Johnny Raymond) kept of his travels and they span the years from 1921 to 1932. These were diaries that I am sure he used to help himself write the book “Memoirs of a Ventriloquist” A great read and I highly suggest it to you.

This Grannat figure is very similar to the face of W.S. Berger’s beloved Tommy Baloney.

He is about 30″ tall, carved wood with leather mouth, horsehair for his wig and dressed in a great period sailor outfit. The very top of his head is open under his hat and I presume at one time there may have been a piece of wood but other than that he is totally original.
