The Next Mystery Ventriloquist

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a “mystery ventriloquist” and I thought it was time to do so.

Who is this mystery vent from yesteryear?

Insull Ventriloquist Figure For Sale

MVC-002S

In recent weeks I have made some huge purchases for the Ventriloquist Central Collection so it is time for another great figure to leave.

This is a very early Len Insull figure (dating from the mid 1940’s) which is in remarkable condition. He has the standard English mouth of lower and upper lip but this fellow also has weighted side to side moving eyes. His eyes are wooden and painted which is an early trait for Len Insull. They work smoothly and seem to work almost on their own.

His hair is crepe and his body is paper mache with paper mache hands. They could use some touch up paint. He stands 40″ tall and has the drop in nech so it free floats.

He is dressed as you see with a great 1940’s jacket, tie and shoes.

If you always had a desire for an Insull figure that works smooth and is about as unusual as you will find this guy is for you. I will divulge the fabulous provenance for this figure to the buyer. It was originally owned by a very famous ventriloquist.

More Words of Wisdom From Ventriloquist Bob Abdou

Here’s more great information from Bob Abdou (Mr. Puppet):

adult promo reduce size

“You’re Horrible!!!”

As performers, we live to hear audiences laugh and clap. Sometimes the money is not the important thing ( note: sometimes) especially when you have the audience eating out of your hand. This feeling comes often to some entertainers and to some, it is
an occasion that only happens in a lifetime. Whenever it happens to you, cherish it cause it doesn’t happen every time.
This brings me to my point, what would you do if you did a show and the client told you that you were ‘horrible” and they told you why? What would be your response?

1) Apologize and give a discount

2) Apologize, take the check and leave quick

3) Don’t apologize, demand a check, leave quick and don’t look back

4) Don’t apologize, demand a check, leave quick and spit on their lawn as you leave

5) Apologize, ask for the check, leave quick, don’t look back and never let anyone ever tell you those 2 words again

This actually happened to me many ( many many ) years ago but I learned a valuable lesson from that show….. I might not be as good as I think I am. Have you ever thought about that before??? I have and I think about improving after every show. It saddens me when I watch a new vent ( what is worse someone who has been doing vent for many years) at the convention performing on open mic or the senior contest and they are not very good. After their performance the audience claps as a kind gesture, but what goes thru the vents mind when they hear the clapping after a poor performance??? You can draw your own conclusion but I won’t sit and watch a vent think about continuing a poor performance. I will approach this vent and maybe give some suggestions or even write some funnier material for him/her. They don’t have to take my advise, that is their decision but I make it my business to try and help them realize that after the convention comes the “real world” and the ‘real world” will not clap when they watch a poor performance. A poor performance is followed by no clapping, booing or even worse someone tells you that you were “horrible”
I often think about the many many vents that have dropped out of the business, do you think this is one of the reasons??

There is nothing worse then hearing “You’re Horrible” after a performance, well maybe that you’re dog died and your 1st wife wants a divorce. That actually happened to me but that is another story. My point is this, watch for these key points to see if your performance is worth watching. (this suggestions are for comedy vents)

1) the audience laughs when you bring out your puppet and you haven’t said one word yet

2) You are into 3 minutes of your routine and the audience still has not stopped laughing yet

3) You are smiling, giving eye contact to the audience and love performing for them and they realize that

4) After the show all you hear is how “terrific” you were and want to book you for a party!!

My response was #5 above and if you saw me spit, I had to cause I had a cold :)

Peace,
Bob Abdou

More About Ventriloquist Figure Headsticks

The past few months I’ve done a couple of blogs about ventriloquist figure headsticks, if you missed them, here they are:

Ventriloquist Figure Headsticks & Controls

Ventriloquist Figure Headsticks – What Is Your Choice?

Since doing the last blog about headsticks, I have been asked by quite a few people if I could go into a bit more depth with the description of the head stick especially the McElroy Cradle style. I have therefore taken the following pictures of the cradle for you to see and before you ask the answer is yes, this is an original cradle.

As you can see in the photo the bottom of the cradle has a long shaft that actually slides into the head stick and then there is a locking device on both the cradle and bottom of the head stick to hold the head stick on. The movement of the head stick inside the body now has a free moving system that allows side to side or back and forth movement and this also facilitates the movement of the weighted floating eyes inside the McElroy head. I do hope this answers all your questions on the McElroy cradle system. It was truly unique and wonderful.

The ball and socket style head stick setup is today the most used in the vent community. It too allows for the ease of movement in any direction but if you use a headlock it will impair some of the movement.
The Insull style floating head stick was very popular but as I said I can imagine that performing for any length of time, even though the heads were made of Paper Mache, would certainly take a toll on your arm. You have to support the head from inside the body holding the head in the correct position. Although it was done for decades I still think it had to be uncomfortable.

On another vent blog there was statements that Marshall used a very weak headstick and that with use they would break and fall apart. I think that it is true a few may have been abused and did fall apart but on the whole that was a misstatement. I have way too many Marshall figures with original headsticks with no problem so I think that to say they were all bad because of one or 2 is wrong.

I have Johnny Main’s figure Archie which was used every day for over 50 years buy a working pro and it is in fine condition. I think that on a few of Marshall’s head sticks the center bore which was done to accommodate the control strings to pass up into the head may have been bored off center to cause a weak side wall which then would give way but to say they were poor head sticks in a wrong statement. In fact most makers copied the style. I have pictured the Marshall head stick for you to see.
