A Very Nice Mid 1930's Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure

mar42-002

Today I am very happy to share with you this very nice Marshall figure which recently came to the Ventriloquist Central Collection. This is a full size figure and dates from the mid 1930’s.

He has slot jaw, upper lip and rolling eye winker. What is unusual is that the eyes in this figure are glass and therefore the rolling eye is the glass color. The eye never appears to ever have been painted for when it rolls down closed, it is so close in the eye socket that paint would just rub off in the process of rolling down.

The neck is the semi ball and socket as the full ball and socket was not yet being used by Marshall.

This figure originally came from the estate of John D. Addley of New York who was a magician. If anyone reading this has any more information on this fellow it would be greatly appreciated so I can add such information to this listing.

Paul Winchell Show Contest

winch9

If you watched the Paul Winchell show which we posted on yesterday’s blog you saw that Paul and his helper on the show Milt had a contest with two if the children in the gallery. What I found that is most interesting is the prize give away that Paul made to the children.

The girl won the contest and was awarded a Jerry Mahoney doll as the first place winner. The boy who came in second won a Knucklehead Smiff doll. These were produced in the early 1950’s as this show was from 1954. The dolls were made of composition ( heads and hands ) and unfortunately composition did not stand the test of time. Most often they became cracked and actually layers would peel off.

If both of the children had saved their prizes from 1954 until today 2009 the actual winner ( monetarily ) was not the girl but the boy. You see the Jerry doll was produced in many more numbers than the Knucklehead. The composition Jerry can be found easily but you will look far and wide to find a Knucklehead Smiff. I my self have had many Jerrys in composition but have only had 2 Knuckleheads. As matter of fact I don’t have either in the Ventriloquist Central Collection at present. All of my examples have been traded off for other figures. I guess I will now look to replace them in the collection.

Loaded Len Insull Ventriloquist Figure

MVC-015S

This is the Len Insull figure that everyone looks to find. You can’t ask for much more in a figure when it comes to movements. This one has it all.

This 1950’s vintage Insull CHEEKY BOY figure stands 44″ tall and has the following functions. Lower lip, upper lip, side self centering eyes, raising eyebrows, winker/blinkers, and wiggling ears.

His head is free floating and is signed on the bottom of the neck from Davenports Magic. he does in fact have his original body which has been reinforced. These were made of paper mache and they did get beat quite a bit. This figure has most of his original paint and the leather on the mouth and eyelids is perfect.

His head is drop in style which is the way all Insull figures were constructed. Gives you free floating effect and 360 degree rotation if desired. He also has his original paper mache hands and lower legs.
