It is always fun to put up pictures of famous ventriloquists of the past. Can you guess who this ventriloquist happens to be AND also the name of his sidekick?

The Tiniest Turner Ventriloquist Figure

03-turner-01

It seems that most of the makers of Figures back in the so called Golden Age of ventriloquism created different size figures but only a couple made figures that were true fully functioning figures just like the full size figures.

Of course Marshall created the Tommy Knots figure which stands 18″ tall and Madeline Maher sold a figure which the catalogue labeled as Tiny and that figure too was 20″ tall. Tiny though was a converted toy which had standard ventriloquist controls ala the head stick instead of the pull string out the back of the neck.

Today I am pleased to present another maker’s 18″ creation of which I only know of one other but its whereabouts eludes me. John Turner figures were a staple for the beginner ventriloquist back in the 1940’s and 50’s and I have had many of his creations in the past but never saw a fully functional 18″ figure until I purchased this little fellow. He only has mouth movement but he has Turner’s standard looking face with his marble eyes and even his shoes are made by turner using wood and hard leather. I believe the clothing you see him inn as a cowboy to be original. He is virtually an untouched just as he came from Turner’s shop. I love this little guy.

Now I mentioned I know of one other miniature Turner and it was owned and used by Loring Campbell and I have included a wonderful picture showing Mr Campbell holding his tiny Turner Figure.

Where is this Turner figure now??

Ventriloquist Maurice Mander

maurice-mander

I was chatting with Bob Abdou the other day and he told me of all the fun he had going out to dinner with all the vent friends in Atlanta and he especially liked seeing Maurice Mander. Maurice is the Ventriloquist who used to be the opening act for James Brown.

Anyway I asked Bob if I could run his article that appeared in the premiere issue of the Barker magazine and he said absolutely so here is that great article about a wonderful ventriloquist!!

Special Insull Ventriloquist Figure for Sale

MVC-001S

I hate to do this but because of some rather large expenditures for the Ventriloquist Central Collection it became necessary for me to sell some ventriloquist figures. I decided that a couple Insull figures I would let go to ease the pain. One of them sold almost immediately but the first one I listed, although I have had some inquiries about, has not yet sold. I have therefore decided to drop the price a bit to make him a much more desirable piece at a nice price.

So if you would like to own a very early Insull (mid 1940’s) with weighted side to side moving eyes, which is a rare movement in the full size Insull figures, here is your chance. I will let him go for $1175.00. Don’t think about him too long because at this price I am sure he will be leaving very soon and as I stated in the ad for him, the buyer will get the provenance for this Insull and will find out the original owners name. A very famous Ventriloquist.

Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure Hands Redux

Not too long ago I did a blog about Frank Marshall and his carved hands. I was able to show you his hands being carved and done in stages. If you missed that posting please click here.

Now we all know Frank used duplicarver heads but many of you may not know that he also used a duplicarver for his hands as well and I can prove this to you. To carve every hand individually is a time consuming effort and also after having over fifty of Frank’s figures I thought it most unusual that the hands were always exact to each other except for some very slight variations to the finger tips. Well here is the reason why. The hands were done on a duplicarver machine and were connected at the finger tips. All Frank had to do was separate them and finish the ends of the fingers.

This duplicarver is made out of maple which is a very hard wood so the stylus of the duplicarving machine could go over it and not make any damage to the master. I hope you enjoy looking at this wonderful Frank Marshall item that is part of the Ventriloquist Central collection.
