There are so many wonderful things about going to the Vent Haven ConVENTion. One such item is getting to meet all the ventriloquists, even those some of us grew up watching on TV.

Among the greatest of the greats is ventriloquist Jimmy Nelson. Here’s a quick video I did last year after just having dinner with Jimmy.

A Ventriloquist Web Site Malady and Cure

I must take a few moments and talk about my web master Steve Hurst. He is a great guy who has given many hours of his free time to the Ventriloquist Central Website and never complains.

When I met Steve four years ago he was excited to do the website with me because he always said he wanted to do a ventriloquist website but never had a reason to do so. I told him I wanted to showcase my collection and we were off and running.

Before long we were partners on this venture. I find the information and provide it to him and even though he stays more in the background he is the major force bringing all the great information to you.

I have to admit you the public never see the problems that can occur with running and keeping a website running unless you do this as a job. The Ventriloquist Central website is now huge with over ten thousand files (as of today) and believe me I am happy Steve has to maintain them rather than me.

Well a couple of weeks ago Steve had a major problem because his main hard drive along with his two of his back up drives with most of the Ventriloquist Central files crashed.

Can I tell you I got a call from a wild man!!!

Steve said he has always told all his computer customers they have to do back up for their files and even provides the service but when you work on your own computer it is always the last to get what is needed so you get the idea.

Now you know you always see in the news how the police make arrests and confiscate computers and can pull information that has been deleted. I said this to Steve and he laughed. He said sure the law enforcement agencies have all the equipment and pay for that sort of service.

Costs to pull files can run into thousands of dollars. I began to shake. How would we be able to survive if he had lost everything?

Well Steve has worked feverishly over the past week and has retrieved much of what was lost (due to what he calls his redundancy in backups on other drives, plus a few “secret” techniques he’s devised) and none of you were ever aware of anything happening behind the scenes. Even with these redundancies, he still had to recreate his “workhorse” computer, the one that controls Ventriloquist Central, which he has been doing the past two weeks.

I was so impressed with the fact that he was able to keep everything running and just wanted to give him a public shout and say thanks to my friend and partner.

Thanks again Steve for a continuing job well done.

Pinxy’s Mortimer Style Ventriloquist Figure

I have the pleasure of showing to you this wonderful Mortimer style figure which was created by Pinxy in the late 1930’s. This figure was purchased from Pinxy by Nick Tomei and was in his collection right up until he passed away. It was then sold through auction and passed through a couple hands before becoming a part of the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

He is a full 40″ tall and is in wonderful original condition. The functions are slot jaw, side to side eyes and one eye is a rolling winker. Very unusual to have moving eyes in a Mortimer style figure. They are still intentionally cockeyed like the original Mortimer but they move. The original paint is just great.

He is dressed in a very snappy suit of the period and even his shoes are the strange color that the original Mortimer wore. Just a great example of Pinxy’s work and the influence that Edgar Bergen’s figures had on other makers of the time.

Effanbee Charlie McCarthy Ventriloquist Figures

effanbee charlie-02

It seems one of the most frequently asked questions I receive is if I can help identify a Charlie McCarthy figure made by Effanbee Co. I always respond yes to those who ask but I will again make this easy for anyone who happens to find a Charlie Figure and think it is an Effanbee.

The Effanbee Co was the only doll company that was licensed by Edgar Bergen to sell figures with the likeness of Charlie. They produced them in two different sizes 15″ tall and 20″ tall. The figures were available in a number of different costumes but the most popular and most common is the black tuxedo.

All true Effanbee Charlies will be marked in raised lettering on the back of the neck which reads ” Edgar Bergen’s Charlie McCarthy an Effanbee Product”. If your figure does not have this embossing on the lower back of the neck …..IT IS NOT AN EFFANBEE.

There were other companies, Freundlick, K&S, Regal that all made figures and they even put monacles and tuxedos on them but those were NOT Charlie McCarthy.

I have done a few videos on these figures and also previously did a blog about this and here is the link to that blog with pictures.
