Wigging a Ventriloquist Figure

The one thing that seems to take the most abuse on a ventriloquist figure is his or her wig. I guess it is the one thing on a figure that has the least protection.

Most performers will use covers on their figures heads and hands but even with a cover you still have to put in on and take it off. This of course messes up the hair and so it has to be brushed and made to look right before going on stage. After a number of years this certainly takes its toll on the wig.

So you have decided to replace the wig. We all go through this and you say to yourself where do I start. The first thing you must consider is how much money you want to spend on same.

I myself am always on the lookout for older wigs for the older figures but that is hard and most when found are not in great shape. I do love it though when I go into a Salvation Army store and find old men’s toupees. Even though the toupee is not a full coverage wig, most will cover the entire ventriloquist figure head.

Those many times will also be human hair which is hand tied and therefore will not fall out from brushing. These really do well with the antique figures.

Paula Young wigs are a second choice for me. The model Abbey comes in a mini petite size which is great for use with a ventriloquist figure but you will also be doing some cutting to make it fit right.

I have used there many times and they run $69.00 each. Sometimes Paula Young runs specials and the price drops and that is when I stock up.

There are some wig shops which specialize in cancer victim wigs and they do carry childrens wigs which work very well but you will spend a lot more money on these.

They will run sometimes into the hundreds depending on the style. If you want a wig that has lace front so that the hair looks like it is growing out of the head then be prepared to spend upwards of $1500.00 and higher. These are usually custom made to fit exact. Edgar Bergen went this route with Charlie McCarthy. Of course he could afford to go this route.

Another style of wig is the crepe hair wig. Frank Marshall as well as all the other makers of the golden era offered crepe wigs. Crepe hair is sold in a braid and can be purchased in most joke shops or any doll supply places.

I know that Michael’s sells it too. You use this with a glue called spirit gum and slowly pull the hair out of the braid and glue it on. A very full and exact coverage of the head can be achieved with this method. It will take a little practice but a full wig cane be made for less than $10.00 with crepe hair.

Ventriloquist Russ Lewis – Hollywood Palace

RBSilly

Back in the late 1960’s Russ Lewis performed all over and was tops… not that he isn’t today… but when I saw this video I just had to put it on the Ventriloquist Central blog for all of my readers to see.

If you want to see a simply wonderful routine this is it. You would be hard pressed to find a better ventriloquial act.

First off- LOVE THE SITE! Fantastic and enjoyable! So happy that Dan has decided to “share” his collection and knowledge! As a “dummy builder” myself, the mechanics & technical stuff really interest me so it would be nice to have more of that. Keep up the great work!

Pastor Scott Bryte, Ventriloquist Figure Maker

ScottandMrPuppet

Bob Abdou brought this to our attention about Pastor Scott Bryte. If you don’t know about Scott, he makes ventriloquist figures, carved out of wood.

This came from “Carvin’ Tom’s Woodcarving Blog“. I think you’ll enjoy this.

On Monday night we a special guest at The Chisels and Chips Carving Club.

Scott Bryte, whose hobby is building ventriloquist dummies, wowed a crowd of about 45 people with a discussion of the fundamentals of dummy creation followed by an impromptu ventriloquist performance.

At the outset, Scott admitted to being “just a little nervous”. He had many performances under his belt, but had never presented a “how-to” to such a group of capable artisans. He needn’t have worried. The crowd loved his talk.

Scott describes himself as a “bagpipe-playing, Victrola-collecting, children’s-book-writing, woodcarving ventriloquist, who while currently a Lutheran pastor, hopes to be an artist when he grows up.”

Also making an appearance last night were:

1) his “altar”-ego “Pastor Woody” [Sorry, I just couldn’t resist that one:-)],
2) a 4-foot tall, Frankenstein-inspired creature named “Sparky”,
3) “Herold, the Christmas Angel”
4) several other tiny dummies that Scott calls a “Carv-TOONs”; an Oragatan, a little frizzy haired blonde kid (no name yet)and Mr. Puppet. These clever, albeit very simple dummies sport only movable mouths. However, what they lack in complexity, they more than makes up for in “cute”.

So, was Scott’s presentation well received? You be the judge. Before he left, he had 3 people begging him to run a puppet making class for them.

I'm No Dummy DVD on Ventriloquism

danwilliner-imnodummy
Dan Willinger & Friends with “I’m Not Dummy”

I finally received my copy of I’m No Dummy today and immediately popped it into my dvd player and watched it without interruption.

Being a lover of ventriloquism and it’s history and roots I must tell you I was enthralled with this documentary from beginning to end.

im no dummy

It certainly is not a comedy movie which I suspect unknowing buyers will find out when they watch this but I do think that they will find that the information and the way it has been presented will hold them for the entire movie.

There are some gem comedy bits both old and new that are scattered throughout the documentary which makes you want to continue to watch because you don’t want to miss anything.

Anyone who has even the slightest interest in ventriloquism is going to love it. So go and purchase your copy if you haven’t already and make some popcorn and learn a little about all aspects of ventriloquism.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.

BTW (by the way)….we will be doing another BlogTalkRadio next Thursday, April 22nd….so mark you calendars NOW!!!!
