James Tattersall Figure Returns to Ventriloquist Central

tattersall001

James Tattersall is not too well know here in the United States but over in England back in the 1950’s he was very well know for his outrageous full size figures and the amazing act that he did. All of the figures Mr Tattersall used were built by his own hands.

The family of James Tattersall still owns all of the figures that James built and used except for one and the story of this figure is very interesting indeed.

It seems that Mister Tattersall had a best friend ( unfortunately I do not have his name ) to whom he presented one of his figures as a gift. That figure remained with this person’s family until 2005 when it was offered for sale at auction.

One of the demands of the seller’s family was that the figure remain in the United Kingdom. I was dismayed by the fact that the family would not accept my bid because I was from outside the country. So I contacted a very good friend of mine, an antique dealer from New Hampshire, whose son lives and works in London England and asked him if he would have his son contact me. I was accommodated and spoke with his son and gave him all the details. He did in fact bid for me and won the figure at the auction. Boy that difference from dollars to pounds was quite pricey. At that time the pound sterling was equal to $2.35. I paid the money and had the figure shipped to me and was very happy when he arrived. Ventriloquist Central Collection now had the only Tattersall figure outside of the Tattersall family.

As I have said many times I only sell figures when I purchase something else. Well it was right before the Vent Haven ConVENTion in 2005 not long after I had received the Tattersall figure when a superb Frank Marshall figure came my way. I could not pass it up so after the purchase I had to decide what figures I was going to sell to re coupe some funds. I took the Tattersall figure and a few others with me not thinking anyone would really step up to pay the price for him but I was wrong. My friend Bob Abdou saw him and fell in love and said he just had to have him. It was enough money that I said yes and he went to Bob Abdou’s great collection. There he has remained since.

As things happen Bob and I got embroiled in a deal and in this deal the Tattersall figure has returned to the Ventriloquist Central Collection. I am thrilled beyond words to have him back because I was always sorry I let him go but times warranted the sale. I can tell you this he will not depart the collection again.

Securing Your Ventriloquist Figure

I am going to divulge my secret to holding my ventriloquist figures that may be seated in a precarious position so that they do not go over and end up like Happy Hazzard did so many years ago. If you don’t know what happened to Happy then click here to read the story.

The first thing you must to is get some 100 pound test fishing line which is a monofilament. This can be purchased at your local sporting goods store and I do believe that Home Depot and Lowes also carries monofilament line as well. I would only do this to a figure you are not planning on moving around very often although to re attach the figure only takes a few moments of work.

You place a very small hook into the wall behind the figure for the line to attach to then wrap the filament around your figure a few times and secure it to the hook. This works great and unless someone tries to move the figure it is locked in place.

Now if you don’t want to put holes in the wall with a hook, then you can wrap the line around the lap of your figure and under what ever it may be seated upon and then tie it off. I have done this as well and it works just fine. I hope this helps you in your displaying of your figures that you are not using.

Answers to Birthday Party Puppet Shows – by Bob Abdou

bob abdou birthday party

A little over a week ago, Bob Abdou sent us a blog about Birthday Shows with a questionnaire. If you missed the blog, click here.

Here are the answers to those questions:

Here are the answers and my reasoning, others may have different opinions and answers

1) False, Although we love ventriloquism and puppetry, some in the real world do not share our passion. Trying to force a show on an audience that is not willing to enjoy it is like serving pork chops at a bar mitzvah, it is not the right place or the right audience.

2) False, when guests do not realize a show is about to start, it can be a turn off. Ventriloquism is an audio show, sound must be heard, when guests are not willing to be quiet and listen to a ventriloquist show, it only ruins it for the rest who do want to be entertained. Let the guests know in the invitation that a puppet show will be featured. You will gain respect and the audience will enjoy your show with much anticipation.

3) False, never, and I mean never perform near any active front or back door, never and I mean never perform near the kitchen and lastly, never and I mean never perform near the bathroom. Having anyone walk right in front of your show during a joke just ruins the show and will throw off your timing.

4) False, never match a competitors price, offer a discount but keep your price above the rest, you will only gain respect.

5) False, having toys in the room will only ruin your show, tell the birthday parents to either put you in another room or put a blanket over the toys and cover them. Exposing toys during a show will only create problems when one parent allows their child to play with a toy.

6) False, When this happens, this is basically a party for the adults to get together and use the birthday child as an excuse for their drinking. How do you stop Celine Dion music? You can’t, so focus on the birthday child as much as you can because the adult guests at this party are only there to mingle with the other adults.

7) False, it is always better to perform indoors than outdoors despite the beautiful weather. Explain to the birthday parents that having a show indoors will allow the children and guests to have a change of scenery, then once your show is over they can start playing again outside.

8) False, try to never have the family pet be in the same room, this animal will draw attention away from your show. As for the 2 year old sitting by themselves. I let the parent of this young toddler know that it will not work and I won’t start my show unless the parent sits with the child. This child with no parent supervision will touch, walk and wander all over your performing area.

9) False, this has happened to me and I tell the parents when they book me…NO SPORTS. When parents go to a birthday party and watch sports, it is just disrespectful to the birthday child. When I start setting up my show and I see the tv is on, I tell the birthday parents immediately, NO TV, shut it off.

10) False, if the parents don’t pay you for your show and you leave with no money, shame on you.
You must have a business plan to either get paid once you arrive, if you don’t, expect to waste your time after you have packed up and your are waiting on a check to wait even longer. Your time is also money, use it wisely.

All these examples have happened to me early in my career, I have learned to nip it in the bud when parents talk to me about booking my birthday party shows. If you decide to go in to the birthday party business, have fun, enjoy acting young again but remember NO TV,

Peace,
Bob Abdou/Mr.Puppet

Thanks Bob.
