Bill Smith & Ventriloquist Senor Wences

Here is a comment we received from one of our faithful readers, Bill Smith:

The very first thing I did on your site was to listen to the Ray Guyll interview where in he said what a great thing you are doing with your site for vent. All I can say is, that was a TREMENDOUS understatement! WOW!! I’ll NEVER have enough time in my whole LIFE to savor all the WONDERFUL items!! God bless you for all your hard work & dedication to this BEAUTIFUL art form! Hope to meet you at the ConVENTion next year. This was my first in 18 years!! I was like a kid at Christmas! Met SO many wonderful folks! EVEN met a man & his wife from here in Syracuse N.Y.!! Ya’ never know! Keep up the great work!

Bill was also kind enough to share some of his memorabilia collection of Senor Wences items. First up are pictures of 45 rpm records and sleeves of Senor Wences:

Last but certainly not least, Bill sent a picture of him and his little friend, “Wally”, plus as he states, “Last but by NO means least, is my FAVORITE photo! Senor Wences & I at the testimonial that Al Getler organized & held at the Ramada Inn in Rochelle Park, New Jersey, on April 2nd, 1989.”

Bill, thanks for the wonderful comments about Ventriloquist Central. We (Steve and I) never tire of getting these comments. We work hard to provide as much information as we can for ventriloquists and those that love the art of ventriloquism.

AND, thanks so much for sharing your Senor Wences memorabilia with everyone.

Bill Smith was a friend of Señor Wences, who was my paternal grandfather. I have many pictures of the family, and anyone can contact me, He was like a father to me and I was more like a daughter to him, we were always seeing each other till the end.

Are there dolls out there of Janice (of Senor Wences) or anything of that character to purchase? I saw one time an oven mit, is there anything and where to find? Thanks alot, great site.

  3. Bill Smith says:

    Dear Marsha,

Senor Wences’ Hand character was Johnnie, not Janice. His other characters were Pedro, the head in the box, & Cecilia the chicken. His “Friends” are in the hands of private collectors as far as I know. I know ebay gets wences stuff often. The record I posted above comes up a LOT! I know that last I checked, ebay has the muppet show episode that Wences was on available on dvd. If you truly love Senor Wences as I do, GRAB IT!! He was outstanding on it!! He was also in the Betty Grable film “Mother wore tights”, doing a bit with Johnnie. A real nice film in itself. I just checked ebay, & they have it on there if you type the title in. & under Senor Wences, they DO have the muppett show, one of the records, & an “autographed” photo. I’m sort of leary of some of these photos. It’s VERY easy with todays technology to forge something. If you look at the photo, you will see that although the photo is black & white, there is red on Pedro’s cheeks, & some color to Johnnie’s nose. He used to do this sometimes. I have more than one autographed photo I recieved personaly thru the mail from him where he did this, drew dogs & people heads around parimiter, etc. as soon as I caption the items, I will be uploading an album of all my Senor Wences items onto my facebook site. If you want to check it out, go to facebook, & type in the email I used there to get right to me istead of sifting thru all the Bill Smiths. The email is houdunit@hotmail.com My personal VENT email is senorwencesfan@hotmail.com in case you want to contact me there. I wish I could get my hands on one of those oven mits you spoke of! I remember an ad for them in people magazine back in the 70’s. Oh well. Maybe one day. Hope I’ve been of some help. Isn’t this an AWSOME site?! Have fun! Ventriloquially yours, Bill Smith
