Whistling Ventriloquist Effect

When I wrote the blog about all the effects of ventriloquist figures our friend Lee Dean wrote in about having a moving leather lower lip on a slot jaw. That got me to thinking because of his description. You can read his statement here:

On January 8, 2012 you asked the question about slot jaw or leather lip preference, and I replied, “No reason not to have both, and when made Kriket figured out the how to but chose not to install the leather lip showing lower teeth on fullest extension of the slot jaw.” This to my knowledge has not been done, the combining of slot jaw and lower leather lip on one control. The lower leather lip could use flat springs one on each side for lower lip, slot jaw opens and last tug of string brings down the lower leather lip exposing the lower teeth.

Well Lee, looking at three figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection, that have the whistling effect it is exactly what you were describing. Frank Marshall did the slot jaw which has a leather lip which when the string is pulled, pulls the leather lip down in the center showing the carved lower teeth. You can do this movement of the lower lip with the mouth open or closed.

So this proves it was done by the master back in the 1930’s

    I had in mind not a whistle showing couple lowers but all lower teeth and using one control only. Still, like you say, a lower leather lip with slot jaw has already been done. Hat’s off to the Master. Guess that is why did not do it on Kriket.

    {correction}
    I had in mind not a whistle showing pucker or the puckering lips as described on page 13 of Marshall’s catalogue, but all lower teeth evenly and using one control only. Still, like you say, a lower leather lip with slot jaw has already been done. Hat’s off to the Master. Guess that is why did not do it on Kriket.
