Ventriloquist Harold Dougherty with Willie O Neal, a Frank Marshall Figure

I was so pleased to be contacted by the heirs of Harold “Doc” Dougherty because they had his ventriloquist figures and decided they should come to the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

Willie is a full size 40 inch tall figure and is in all original condition and dates from the late 1920’s to early 1930’s. He still has his original paint, wig and his body is original too.

His hands are rather large and appear to have been replaced a very long time ago more than likely by Marshall or at least painted by Frank as the paint matches.

The clothing is also what Doc had him dressed in because they are nailed on. I decided I would leave the cloths as they are. Not my favorite but hey it is what Doc used.

Here are pictures of Doc’s Frank Marshall figure named Willie O’Neal.

He has just mouth movement but what else do you need? I hope you enjoy seeing this great Marshall.

One Response to Ventriloquist Harold Dougherty with Willie O Neal, a Frank Marshall Figure

  1. Lee Dean says:

Adios Gabo by Carl Strock http://blog.timesunion.com/carlstrock/adios-gabo/423/ is about Gabriel Garcia Marquez 1927-2014, Gabo to his friends. Gabo wrote “El olor de la guayaba,” meaning the smell of the guava. Strock says it is “a collection of conversations between him and a friend… a way of hearing a voice that would now have nothing more to say.” Gabo says in his little book: “I believe the imagination is only an instrument for the elaboration of reality… In the end the fountain of creation is always reality. And fantasy, that is, invention pure and simple, a la Walt Disney, without a handle on reality, is the most detestable thing there can be ….. Children don’t like fantasy. What they like, to be sure, is imagination. The difference between the two is the same as between a human being and a ventriloquist’s dummy.”

Frank Marshall was gifted with a great imagination in carving ventriloquist figures to make it easy for the ventriloquist to imagine a conversation.

The only necessary movement is mouth and, as you say what else do you need while talking and until the ventriloquist dummy has nothing more to say.
