What is New Is Old

In the course of development of ideas for ventriloquist figures it seems that everything has been done. I am talking about movements for ventriloquist figures. We all know about this following functions; slot jaw, upper lip, raising eyebrows, stick out tongue, flapping ears, flip wig, spitter etc, etc, … so what else is new.

I was asked if I knew of the Shrugging Shoulder effect and had to confess it was not a new idea. Foy Brown created that effect back in the 1950’s and he also came up with the idea of a rocking clavicle which allows the figure to actually look down without showing the head stick.

I have pictured a Foy Brown body with both of these functions incorporated into one body. They work easily and are very user friendly. You can shrug either shoulder independently or both at the same time. The rocking clavicle is truly amazing in that no effort is used to make the head look down. Just move the headstick towards the rear and the shoulder collapses creating the effect.

A figure just sold very recently that had a shrugging shoulder effect and he asked me if it was an original idea. This proves what is new is old.

Bill Boley Ventriloquist Magician

I was fortunate enough back right after Bill Boley passed away to be able to purchase a number of his figures from his collection by way of his wife Charlene. They still reside here with the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

I came upon some very neat pictures of a very young Billy Joe Boley and thought I would share them with all of you. I do know some of you, especially Lee Dean, will remember this fine looking young man. He turned out to be the consumate performer and unfortunately was taken from all of us way too soon.

Enjoy!!!

For Sale by W.S. Berger

w-s-berger-price-list

Boy I wish I could turn back the hands of time. Just take a look at this great list of books and a couple of vent figures that were available for sale and the prices were postpaid by my idol W. S. Berger (click picture for larger view). I guess I will buy them all.

I happened to have this hard list in the small paper collection I have and thought you all would like to see some of the items Mr Berger would sell. The Jerry Mahoney figures at the bottom of the list certainly are intriging.

Frank Marshall, Bob King and The Great Lester

ventriloquists-at-magicians-convention

It is always fun to see and read about our great mentors of the past. This particular article and picture was from the Davenport Democrat & Leader back in the 1940’s.

(Click on the picture for a larger view) The caption may be hard to read, so here’s what is written:

Ventriloquists were among those attending the 15th annual convention of the International Brotherhood of Magicians which opened Wednesday at Hotel Blackhawk. At the left is Bobby King who talks for “Tiny” the smallest working professional dummy in the world. At right is the Great Lester, veteran ventriloquist who taugh Edgar Bergen, and at the rear is Frank Marshall, Chicago, who made the Charlie McCarthy model the Great Lester is holding. Marshall is credited with making the original Charlie McCarthy.

We all know that Frank Marshall promoted himself as the creator of Charlie McCarthy even though Mr Bergen said differently but this picture is great because it shows Frank with a Charlie McCarthy figure he made and the Great Lester is holding same. It is a great Marshall figure and I would love to have it for my collection. Shows that Frank certainly made Charlie McCarthy copies even while Mr Bergen was at the top of his game.
