Sailor Joe Ventriloquist Figure by Ken Spencer

spencer06-004S small

It is always fun when I am able to share a figure with all of you. I decided today to show you this great example of figure building by Ken Spencer. Ken Spencer was a contemporary of Frank Marshall and actually worked for a bit in the Mack shop. He later went on to do great ventriloquism in his own right and built some fantastic figures.

This fellow whom I named Sailor Joe is a wonderful totally original figure never having been restored in any way by anyone. This is just the way I like to find the figures. Other than a bandage on his neck ( he cut himself shaving ) he is untouched. Unusual paint in that it is glossy. Must have been the only paint at the hardware store when Ken purchased that day.

He is 42″ in height and has ball and socket neck with the male connector on the bottom of the head stick which slides into the female connection on the board inside the body to hold the head in place. He has slot jaw, upper lip smile ( made with a piece of metal on the outside of the upper jaw and painted as the upper lip and this I think is unique to Ken Spencer), side to side weighted moving eyes and also his eyes will blink. Unfortunately the string is broken which controls that function and I have not made the repair. When repair is done I will add the pictures.

He is dressed in a 1940’s period sailor suit and also old worn shoes.

If only he would reveal to me who his original owner happened to have been!!

Ventriloquist Figures Come In All Sizes

Ventriloquist figures come in all sizes that we all know. I forgot that I had this kind of unique novelty figure which might be the smallest I have found to date.

This is a toy Jerry Mahoney which was made as a finger vent figure and painted as a clown. It is all original and dates from the early to mid 1960’s. The shirt is made of a vinal material and the head is plastic. There is a control knob inside the shirt that if pressed up opens the mouth and if it is turned side to side the eyes actually move side to side as well.

The shirt has two holes so that a youngster could put his your her fingers through and it looked like arms. I have never seen another one like this and thought you too would enjoy seeing this cute and rare ventriloquile toy.

Jeff Dunham Makes Time Magazine

I am not sure if you have read about this elsewhere or seen this article yet but if not I wanted to share this with all of you.

Jeff Dunham has made Time magazine and the article is a great treatise on Mr. Dunham. Talks about his early start as a ventriloquist through to his wildly popular characters of today.

It really is a must read.

Credit Where Credit is Due – Paul Winchell and Frank Marshall

It really was fun to watch the video where Frank Marshall was the mystery guest and Winchell did not know him (click here if you missed it). I myself find that very strange indeed but it was television and it had to look real.

Paul Winchell never really liked to give Frank Marshall credit for making Jerry Mahoney and in fact the version of Jerry that we all know is a rework done by Winchell. The original Jerry had regular thin eyebrows and the eyeliner around the eyes was not heavy as we see in most of the pictures of Jerry Mahoney.

Our good friend George Boosey has supplied us with a great photograph for us all to see where Jerry is in his original form from Frank Marshall and he even gives the master builder Frank Marshall credit with his inscription on same.

I hope you enjoy this photo and thanks George for sharing it with us all.
