Lee Dunn Update – Good News

Hooray Hooray!!

Yes Lee has made it home and he is doing really well at this point. His bleeding on the brain has stopped and is in check and so the neuro surgeon said he could go home. The rest of his injuries were considered bumps and bruises (except for the broken clavicle and rib) and therefore could be taken care of by bed rest. No more need for nursing care so home he went.

I have spoken to him and he wants to thank everyone for the kind thoughts and well wishes but I am going to include his address here so that if you would like to send him a well wish you most certainly can:

Lee Dunn
712 North Mendenhall
Memphis , Tn. 38122-4707

I am sure he would not mind a quick get well wish.

Glen Cargyle And His Marketing Ads

cargyle-ad

Glen Cargyle is famous for having built the ventriloquist figure used by Danny Kaye in the movie ” Knock On Wood” but what I found to be amazing was this ad in which he is actually offering this figure for sale to the public. I am not sure he ever sold any of these because to my knowledge none have been accounted for in any collection to this date.

Also in this ad he offers a ventriloquist figure which has all the controls inside the head and you must put you hand inside the head to work the controls. He also talks about a rubber style covering over the head to give a more lifelike appearance. Again I have never seen or found anyone who has one of these figures.

It is known that Mr Cargyle took many deposits for figures and then disappeared. Maybe his marketing of these figures was too great for him to be able to accomplish and this forced him to vanish from the Hollywood scene. I do know that he was found murdered in Hawaii. Very interesting to say the least!!

Alexander's Dummy Band

This article was written by W. S. Berger for The Oracle and was so interesting I had to share. Aaron “Pop” Steinman carved all the figures and then hooked them up some how so that he could operate them from foot pedals.

Very ingenious and just shows the lengths that some will go to be both creative and unique.

“Alexander’s Dummy Band” Is Best Dummy Band In The Land
By W. S. Berger

“Come on and hear-come on and hear – Alexander’s Dummy Band.”

That’s what Brother Aaron “Pop” Steinman, 3851 West King Edward Avenue, Vancouver, B. C., is singing these days. He is the creator of “Alexander” and the, musical trio pictured above. A ventriloquist of over thirty years’ standing, he operates all four figures, which he carved himself.
He supplies voices for the whole gang, and he and his wife manipulate most of the actions by means of hidden foot controls.

“Alexander” is a mechanical marvel. He can put his hat on his head at any desired angle and then take it off; he stands or sits without being supported; he can write; he can hold a telephone receiver and ‘talk” (while “Pop” does the vent voice for the telephone “bit”) ; he can play a mandolin as well as lead the band; he can hold a bottle in his left hand while removing the cork with his right, and then pour out a drink; he can stand on his head or do the “splits,” as well as stand on one leg; he can put a cigar in his mouth, remove it, flick the ashes and then put the cigar back in his mouth ; he can take a handkerchief from his pocket and wipe his nose ; he salutes soldiers ; and, finally, he can heave things at hecklers!

The figures in the band not only “play” their instruments, the music being supplied by record, but they stand up and “sing” (with the vocals supplied by the ventriloquist). They are 30 inches tall, while “Alexander” stands 42 inches in height. They perform on a stage 32 inches high, 24 inches wide and 5 feet long. “Pop” manipulates “Alexander” with his right hand and “Charles Henry” with his left, while the remaining two are controlled with foot push buttons. The detailed process is a “trade secret.” Not satisfied with this achievement, “Pop” is now working on another “boy” who will be able to do things the other ones can’t do.

Brother Steinman became a member of IBV after seeing Brother Clifford Guest, the great Australian vent, in a performance in Vancouver, and talking to him after the show. This method of getting new members is recommended to all our brothers. “Pop” Steinman, we are indeed proud to have an inventor like you and a go-getter like Clifford Guest in our fraternity.

Frank Marshall Repairman Extraordinaire and W.S. Berger, Flashes From Vent Haven

We all know how good a figure maker Frank Marshall was and we all know he did many repairs on figures but I had no idea how accomplished he really was until I read the following except as a news flash from W.S Berger in the 1953 January issue of the Oracle Magazine. I have it here for you all to enjoy!!

Flashes From The Vent Haven
By W.S. Berger

FLASH-My visit to Frank Marshall’s shop for one week was very colorful. For a little relaxation from the daily grind at the Vent Haven, decided to go to Chicago, primarily to devote some time with my warm friend F r a n k Marshall, to secure names for the Directory of Ventriloquists and to have an intricate repair job made on a McElroy figure.

Frank turned his files over to me, and a number of new names were found for the Directory. As to the cranial operation on the figure, it looked like a jig saw puzzle, since several controls were disconnected from the intricate mechanism, but Frank finally wound up with a complete and most satisfactory job.

Dr. Joseph Sonntag and his charming wife invited us to their home for dinner, which we enjoyed immensely . . . even a baked apple was served. Mrs. Sonntag is a very good cook and is in competition with Muzz.

After dinner we were entertained with a series of colored slides of vents and others, which were projected on a screen. We were also amazed at the fabulous collection of playing cards, which they have collected over a period of years. Anyone having playing cards, should contact the doctor at 215 E. Chestnut Street, Chicago.

It was a thrill to meet many of the vents that came in unexpectedly, at Frank’s shop. Here they are, Stew Gilliam, Jay Jaxon (he came in twice from Plano, Ill.) Great Chesterfield, Herman Winters, Milt Rowland, Paul Stadelman, Les Lester and wife, Lester Marshall, Jr., Lynn Drew, of
Evanston, Ill., who signed up in the IBV.

Talked over the phone with Stanley Burns from Pittsburg, and George Marks, of Detroit. Both were after their jobs that Frank had in process.

Finally, Frank rearranged his shop for a professional photographer to take some shots to be used in his new catalog, that is in process, and of course Frank insisted that I be in this photograph. I enjoyed being office boy and typist for the duration of my stay, and hope to repeat the procedure again. I was surprised at all the details that are associated with this vent figure making business.

Good News About Lee's Condition

I am pleased as punch to be able to report that the bleeding that Lee had on the brain has stopped. That is a great sign for sure. He is awake and now realizes what he has gone through but also is just now finding out how bad his body hurts. The medication has worn off and his body is telegraphing him all its signals of injury. That too is a good thing because there is no paralization of any kind.

I will update as I find out information!!
