Jackie Monticup and his Magical Web Site

I was very pleased when we were contacted by Jackie Monticup to use a picture of the Black Shaw figure that’s in the Ventriloquist Central Collection, for a bio he wrote for his Magical website about WHJ Shaw.

Of course we gave him our permission to use it and I am please to share his website with all of you reading this.

Early Jeff Dunham Photos

With all the news lately about ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, a regular contributor to Ventriloquist Central, Bill Smith, sent in this email and pictures of Jeff:

“These are 4 of MANY photos I took at the testimonial luncheon given in honor of Senor Wences, at the Ramada Inn, Rochelle Park, N.J., Sunday, April 4th, 1989. This was while Jeff was still doing colleges & comedy clubs. He had not done his first Tonight Show appearance yet! I had him autograph these 8×10’s at the 1990 conVENTion. Mr. Wences was battling health problems, so unfortunatley could not perform at his testimonial, but the others to “trod the boards” that GLORIOUS day, were: Alan Semok,Tom Basso, Judy Buch, Dan Ritchard, Robert Ladd, Stanley Burns, Jeff Dunham, & Juggler Jay Green. Also on hand were strolling clowns “Sparky” & “Cuddles”. The eVENT was organized by Al Getler. {THANKS AL!!}. Feel free to post these as well as any or all of this letter about it.”

Best, Bill

Great Ventriloquist Carrying Case-Stand

MVC-008S

I am pleased to offer you this wonderful wood , custom crafter Ventriloquist carrying case-performance stand. This case is all lined with foam rubber and will easily protect your figure in transit to a show and then you can utilize it for your performance.

The case measures 41″ tall, is 17″ wide, and 13″ deep. The bottom has casters on it to roll around. The back door opens and also the black vinyl covered top opens. I have pictured this case with a figure for you to see but he is not included in the sale. I think you could carry 2 figures in this case with ease.

The case has a nice gray check design on 3 sides. The back is just painted gray. You could customize this with little work.

The Times They Are A Changing

It has finally time to make a small change. Steve the webmaster and I have gone back and forth over this for quite some time in regards to the Ventriloquist Marketplace.

Steve has even been in contact with Mike Brose of “Puppets and Props” discussing whether or not the two websites should charge for listings. Both agreed that due to the work involved, some sort of fee should be put into place.

Starting on Nov 1, 2009 both websites (Puppets and Props, Ventriloquist Marketplace) will be charging $5.00 for a listing. Steve and Mike put in quite a bit of work to get everything posted for you and has done this without compensation.

On the Ventriloquist Marketplace, all classified ads will remain free as long as it is not an ad to sell.

All ads that are currently listed will be grandfathered in and will not get charged.

I hope you all understand and continue to use Mike Brose’s site, Puppets and Props and the Ventriloquist Marketplace because the cost is really tiny when you consider the alternative of using the large auction site. Their listing and final sale fees far exceed the $5.00 either one of us will be charging.

Thanks again for understanding
Dan, Steve & Mike

Bob Wallace Wood Carver

edgarbergenandgang

I received an email the other day asking about the wood carver, Bob Wallace. I remembered doing a blog about this a couple of years ago, so I dug through the blog archives and here is that blog.

One of the great mysteries that we all know about, and the actual answer that will always elude us, is who made the original Charlie McCarthy. It is known that Bergen of course purchased it from the Mack’s shop but Marshall more than likely worked on it. How much work Marshall did we will never know. We do know that Marshall later on made a few Charlie heads that were close. One of the more famous ones is the figure that Stanley Burns used that had crossing eyes. It was a real close example of a Charlie head.

Edgar Bergen did, later on in his career, have duplicates of his famous trio remade by a wood carver named Bob Wallace. He was from Los Angeles so he was not far from Edgar who was living in Hollywood.

Wallace was a carver of store displays and his talent was superb. He did a great job of reproducing Charlie, Mortimer and Effie and in Edgar’s hands you would have never known that they were not the original figures. Of course if you had the original figures side by side to the new carved figures there were differences.

Most of the reproduction Charlie heads that you will see for sale privately or publicly will be from castings off the Bob Wallace carved heads.

Since Ventriloquist Central is an informational web site, I am happy to share with the vent community the Bob Wallace Catalogue which shows the three Bergen characters along with some other amazing carving done by this talented man.

However, after that blog, Doug Preis member of the Bergen Foundation sent in this information for us so that everyone would have the correct information !! His response:

“The only figures made by Bob Wallace ever used by Edgar Bergen were: Frowning Charlie…Sleepy Charlie (later turned into Old Man Charlie) and a “regular” Charlie…that Bergen used very rarely…and mostly for photo shoots.

Wallace never “finished off”…nor did Edgar ever animate…or use the Mortimer…or Effie from Bob Wallace. They remain solid blocks of wood to this day. The Bergen Foundation owns them. Other copies do exist. The Wallace family has a “set” as they were duplicarved.

The photos in the Wallace “brochure” are misleading…as the only figure pictured that was carved by Wallace…is the separate larger shot of Charlie with his mouth open. The other photos are pre-existing publicity shots of Bergen with his original figures. NOT Wallace’s work.”

Thanks Doug for the information and I want to thank Ray Guyll for sharing this piece of Ventriloquist history with the vent community.
