A Blog Contribution From Ventriloquist Ony Carcamo

Last Saturday I posted a guest blog written by Bob Abdou about comedy writing.

Our friend from the Philippines, ventriloquist Ony Carcamo, sent in this contribution:

Vent Without Scripts
by Ony Carcamo

After I posted a reply on Bob Abdou’s article here about being funny, I got an inquiry regarding using improv comedy in my vent routines.

Two years ago I started writing a book on this topic–improv comedy and ventriloquism–but I had to postpone the project when shows came in. So today I thought of giving you a few ideas on how I do these routines on stage.

Improv comedy uses no scripts, no preparation, no pre-show work. The comedy happens in real time, when the “players” (the actors: you, your figure, and a few members of the audience) struggle to think of what to say and do during a situation.

This is really frightening, especially in the first few times if you’re doing it live. You have no one to turn to but your own wit, guts, and fast thinking. But I’m sure you’ll be rewarded in the end.

I’d like to share with you one of my favorite improv games, called the “ABC game.” Improv groups I know usually use 2-3 players on stage. As a vent routine, there are two players: your figure and one audience member.

Because I use my male figure Mr. Parley in this game, I pick a female volunteer as his partner. I believe this makes the routine funnier because there could be a “love” angle later in the dialogue.

The game is simple: The audience gives a topic, say, “first date.” Then Mr. Parley and the girl should engage in a unique conversation where their lines should start in alphabetical order. For example, Mr. Parley starts with “A”…

Mr. Parley: Any place you want to go?

Then the girl answers with a line that starts with “B”…

Girl: Baseball game perhaps.

Then Mr. Parley, with “C”…

Mr. Parley: Crush, yes, I have a crush on you…

Then the girl answers back, with “D”… And this goes on until they reach the letter “Z.”

Since each player doesn’t know what topic the audience will give, and doesn’t know how the other player answers, the routine is really unpredictable. And that makes it always fresh and challenging for us vents.

To help you visualize this hilarious routine, I’d like to show you this clip from my show, where I did this game. Sorry we used our own language and you’ll sure won’t understand what we talked about, but listen how my audience loved this bit, which I do regularly in my adult shows.

Hope this gives you an idea on how to do improv games in your act.

Ventriloquist Terry Fator is Wowing in Vegas

Ventriloquist Terry Fator

Many of you many not know that Helen and I are currently on vacation in Vegas. I just love this town. There is everything here that you could possibly want on vacation ie great weather (hot), food, gambling (if that is your thing) shows…..and speaking of shows I went last night to see Terry Fator.

This was one of the best shows I have ever seen in Vegas since I started vacationing here 16 years ago. It is a family geared show but has enough innuendo for the adults to make them very happy to have attended.

His show is the variety style too. As the attendees are filtering into the theatre there is a DJ spinning records and as the crowd gets larger he gets everyone involved and by the time the show is about to start people are up dancing and singing and you are a part of the show.

The lights flash and onto the stage comes a dancer who, in my opinion, was the best dancer I have seen since Michael Jackson and he did just that. He starts by dancing in the styles of the 50’s then 60’s 70’s right through to today. When I say styles I should say dances such like Elvis on stage, Chubby Checker and the Twist, Michael Jackson doing Thriller etc, etc, to present. It was phenomenal.

Then out comes Terry. His stage presence is just superb. He is big and he is humble. He is a master ventriloquist and an awesome singer. His delivery is perfect. His lip control is astounding and his choice of music leaves you just wanting more and more and more. His characters are developed to the point that they are alive in his hands and the material, comedy, is top notch. You are laughing when they are not engaged in song.

Unlike every other show in Vegas Terry comes out and says I know you all have smuggled cameras into the show so have a ball and take all the pictures you want. He even said you could video but requested not from start to end but I am sure if you did that no one was going to stop you.

He had a few characters I had not seen, a John Lennon looking figure and he did a great Beatles bit that was hilarious. His Crash Test Dummy was a scream and the new Winston puppet was awesome.

Terry’s show runs a full 90 minutes and when the show is done you have felt like it was only 5 minutes. It is moving constantly with the help of one of the best bands I think you would ever hear. It was a 7 piece ensemble but the sound they put out made them sound like it was a 20 piece orchestra. I guess when you get to the top, like Terry, you can have the best and it shows. Also his comedy writing must be being done by the best as well. Your sides hurt from laughing.

I did in fact contact Terry prior to coming to Vegas and we had planned on meeting but it ended up that his mother and one of his friends growing up father, who was a POW in Vietnam for 7 years, came to town so unfortunately for me our meeting was unable to take place. Hopefully I will get to see him for a meet and greet the next time.
Also as important, all the proceeds from Terry’s store at the Mirage goes to a military charity.

So take it from me, when you come to the mecca of entertainment and vacation, Las Vegas, this show is a MUST see.

Here’s something that is very unique and different. In fact, I acquired this long before I ever started collecting ventriloquist figures.

As you’ll see in this video, it sure fits in with the Ventriloquist Central Collection.

Guest Blog – Bob Abdou, Now That's Funny

A regular contributor to Ventriloquist Central, Bob Abdou, has written this article to share with you.

Now that’s funny!!
By Bob Abdou
www.mrpuppet.com

Ok, you just bought the perfect puppet that you now want to use and you are happy. You have practiced day & night with lip control and manipulation and you are pleased. You have worked on stage presence (shoes shined, clean and pressed clothes, hair combed) and you now know how the mic works and you are pleased…..What’s left but material for your show!!

You could steal material from you tube, you could steal other vents material from the convention or from their shows, You could buy their dvd’s and do everything they do because they get tons of laughs and that is what you want. But NO, that is not smart, practical or nice, Don’t do it. —There are too many ways to find your own material.

I will give you my thoughts, opinions and ways that I have used for my shows since being involved with ventriloquism for 20 years. You might know other ways, if so please share with us, this article is what I have done to make my shows funny and successful.

Life brings a tons of emotion in a day, when things are funny keep track on what made you smile or laugh that day. Life is full of things that are funny.

Keep a notebook handy, when you hear a funny word or line and you can rewrite that in a dialogue for your act, write it down as soon as you hear it, chances are you will not remember it 5 minutes later.

When watching tv and something makes your laugh, write it down and put it in a box, at the end of the month take out that piece of paper, if it did not make you laugh again – throw it out, however if it made you laugh again – rewrite it in a dialogue for your act.

The best description I ever heard about watching a ventriloquist act is this…“it is like listening in on a conversation, ease dropping”. Since vent is mostly all verbal – it must be interesting and confrontational. It must make your audience want to listen. If they don’t, they will look at their watch, that is a clue your act is not interesting and it is time to do tons of rewriting. Write your show as if someone is listening in on it, which basically that is what a ventriloquist act is all about.

Talking about violence, death, blood, Aids and killing – I find is not funny, it divides the audience ( ok, what about Achmed? ). – Jeff is an exception to the rule, Let’s focus on us, for we are not the Dunham’s or the Fator’s of the world…..yet.

Too much pausing, or saying “mmmm” is a distraction, dead space between lines can hurt and make your act boring. Treat your act as if your puppet is real. Remembering your lines is as important as lip control or manipulation.

Stay currant on material, telling Clinton jokes will only get laughs from certain ages of your audience. You don’t want that, you want the whole audience to enjoy your show. So keep your material fresh and know your audience.

What about joke books?

Here is what I do about joke books, because there a ton of books out there. When I pick up a joke book and open it up, I try to read 3 jokes. If any of the 3 jokes make me laugh, I buy it immediately. Why? Paying $5.00 for a joke book is well worth it and it will make my shows more funnier, longer in length and polished.

Read the local paper and find funny stories from the city you are living in, that will make your act fresh, appealing and make your audience care.

I get asked, where do I get my material from?

My answer is mostly from the above suggestions. I also get them from listening to other entertainers besides vents. Get out and associate with the world. Clowns, magicians, jugglers and others can help you create new material, just don’t hang out with mime’s, they don’t talk to anyone.

Every comedian is different, so should you be.

John Schaibley's Great Granddaughter, Jade Visits The Ventriloquist Central Collection

raymondandann-schaibley

The world is certainly a very small place and as the Internet increases that becomes more and more evident. The proof came to me when I received an email from Jade Sylvan and she told me she was the great granddaughter of John Schaibley and she wondered if she could come and see her great grandfather’s ventriloquist figure and his journals. I of course said an emphatic yes to her coming to see the collection and her great grandfather”s very old ventriloquist figure. This figure was made by louis Grannat of Brooklyn New York somewhere around the turn of the 20th century and became John Schaibley’s very first figure in 1916.

You can check him out here

We arranged for her to come visit today Aug. 25th and at 10:00am sharp Jade arrived here at my home. This was a really nice meet and greet we had, she met my wife Helen and son Jason, Then Jade came into the Ventriloquist Central Collection room and was awed by the collection and by the fact that she was actually able to hold her great grandfather’s figure and journals.

I must explain that Jade is without question from that entertainer’s gene poole. She is a very talented poet, published writer and singer songwriter. She actually changed her name legally to Jade Sylvan, because of her stage work, but her birth name was Jennifer Schaibley and her brother is John Schaibley IV. Please take some time and check this talented woman out:

www.jadesylvan.com

Jade had a great time and so did I being able to share some of her families past with her and the best and most unusual fact is that she lives in Somerville MA, which is just down the road from me about 4 miles. As a matter of fact I am a Constable in the City of Somerville. So it just proves how by way of the Internet, she never would have found me and her great grandfather’s figure with out same, how small the world has really become.

jade01

Jade it was a pleasure having you over and I hope to see you again soon.
