My Ventriloquist Christmas Wish

juro jerry mahoney ad

Here is the ad that most of us baby boomers drooled over as kids in the 1950’s.

If you watched Saturday morning television before going out to play then you watched Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney and you just dreamed of having Jerry appear under the tree.

Now you can relive it by looking at this ad.

… and there he was, under the tree on Christmas morning. Then came the disappointment — the mouth wouldn’t open when I pulled on the string. It took a knife and a little skill to trim the bottom of the mouthpiece so it wouldn’t hit the neck and allow the mouth to open and close. Years later, I saw the ad for the “deluxe” model with moving eyes. I didn’t get that one. I don’t know what happened to the original figure, but I found another one years later, with two outfits and still in the cardboard “suitcase” with the booklet and bought it. I still have that one.

Aaaah. I remember the ad. I had the figure (and the smaller one with the strong out the back of the neck). It was magical to find this Jerry under the tree. Magical, too, to find the one with moving eyes under the tree some years later. Look at the price! A veritable fortune then! Thanks for the memory, Dan.

I had the smaller one with the string in the back of the head. Mine came from Sears. Latter I took him apart and put the head on a head stick with a trigger, Made him a new body. I did many shows with him, and somewhere along the way he disappeared. I have no idea what happened to him. I do have a few photo’s to remember him .
