More on Kukla Fran and Ollie from Bob Abdou

Bob Abdou sent us pics from his collection and more information:

Growing up watching Saturday morning in the 60’s and early 70’s, I never appreciated puppets on tv because I wanted cartoons not a puppet show. When Kukla Fran and Ollie was on, that was my time to go outside and play.

Today I appreciate the pioneer genius of Burr Tillstrom and Fran Allison and started a collection of their toys and puppets.

There are board games, bootleg hand puppets, wax Christmas postcard records, utensils, Halloween costumes and my personal favorite
a blow up toy of Kukla and Ollie, I only have Kukla, I need Ollie to complete the set.

Another unique item is the Kukla (which means Puppet in Turkish) mascot head used for publicity and store openings. Inside the head is dated 1957.

The framed pajamas are not mentioned in the Kukla Fran Ollie website, but they do exist.
a photo shows the actual logo image on the pajamas.

Learning the history of puppets keeps us focused on the future.
And the future of puppetry whether hand/glove, shadow, marionettes, body, object or ventriloquism is looking good

Peace,

It may be that the ventriloquial puppet called “dummy” comes from dumbshows of mine, in which case a figure should be proud to be called a dummy.
