A Wonderful Frank Marshall Figure

It is so nice when I am contacted by folks wanting to have their Marshall figures join the Willinger collection.and this was the case with Robert Echols.

Robert is an antique dealer in CA and he deals in Old Darby Horses from carousels (also a very fine item to collect). In his travels he happened into an antique store in Pismo Beach, CA and found this wonderful Marshall figure. He held on to it for quite a number of years but when he found me he knew it had to come to reside here.

I have posted some pictures of his appearance as Robert found him and then pictures of how he looks now.

I have written many times about restoration on these figures and you can see that this Marshall was certainly deserving of the re-do. He was missing his wig, the leather under the chin, and he had been painted a number of times over the years. To me this means bring him back.

The end result is this fabulous Marshall figure which is almost identical to a figure that already resides here named Joe Doaks.

He also is the same face as Joe Flip who resides in the Vent Haven Museum.

This is definitive proof of the fact that Marshall used a duplicarver. because there are three of the same face.

This head has the original card still attached inside the head from Marshall’s Loomis Blvd shop so this figure was done in the late 40’s to early 50’s and I believe that this particular head’s duplicarver is the reason the leather is used under the chin. It may have not have been retooled for the wedge cut neck found in Marshall’s later figures.

This figure is a full 42″ tall and has only moving mouth function.

I hope you enjoy seeing him.

Build Your Own Ventriloquist Figure

Last year, Steve Hurst, my webmaster, created an instructional video set entitled, “The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1”.

The other day, Steve forwarded me one of the emails that he received and I wanted to share it with you:

Hi Steve

Shane West here from the UK. I purchased the “The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1”, from you last year and have finished my dummy now.

It has not taken that long to do but I have only been able to do little bits to it here and there so thats where the months have gone.

I would love to take this opportunity to thank you for putting this course together. Building a dummy has been a long term ambition of mine right from child hood when I used to make cardboard dummies.

Now all I need to finish the one I have made from your course is to clothe him. As soon as I have clothes for him I will send some photos for you to see.

Any way thanks again and look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Regards
Shane West

Thanks, Shane for the kinds words about Steve’s course.

Steve has shared with me that due to the company that is producing this course for him raising their prices, he will be forced to raise the price of “The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1”, very soon.

So, if you’ve been thinking about getting this course, do so now, before the price increase.

Fabulous Paul Winchell Photographs

We are all in love with Paul Winchell and many of us collect any and all pictures of him and his pals Jerry and Knucklehead that we can find. We all scour the picture bins of dealers at antique shows and ephemera shows in this search.

Back in September 1952 a photographer Gordon Parks , a photographer for Life Magazine, did a shoot of a young Paul Winchell (he is 29 years old) and these are the entire shoot with some 200 photographs. They are perfect resolution and I myself have printed them out on photographic paper and now have a wonderful photo album of Paul Winchell.

Beware because there is an unscrupulous ebayer trying to sell one of these pictures on ebay for $49.95. He says a rare previously unpublished picture but it is one of these photos of Winch with Knucklehead.

I hope you all enjoy these pictures

Random Notes on Ventriloquism

Some of the threads that are talked about all the time on the different vent lists are choosing a suitable figure, right kind of movements in the figure, breakage of string that control the mouths on figures etc, etc. Continue reading

Al Good's New Web Site

One of the nicest and most helpful people in the world of ventriloquism is Al Good. He is of course known to everyone who attends the Vent Haven convention because he was always set up with what was a complete photographic studio and took great shots of you with your figure. He has backed off from this in recent time.

Al also sells great stands for ventriloquists (I personally own two of them) to sit your figure upon while performing or as I use them, to display my figures. These stands are also great for puppeteers and magicians.

Al decided he needed a web site and I am happy to let you know that Ventriloquist Central’s own webmaster, Steve Hurst has put Al’s site together for him.

See Al’s website at: http://www.algoodproducts.com

Take a look at his site and while you’re there, if you don’t own one of his great vent stands, invest in one today!!!
