Ventriloquist Figure Maker's Follow Up

It seems to a few that my piece I wrote on the blog about figure makers has stirred the pot quite a bit and therefore did garner some good comments (Click here to see the blog). My intention with this blog was to be informative and let everyone know that at this present time it is not an easy task to find a pro figure maker that will deliver a figure in a very timely fashion. Of course for this to take place the figure maker must be a full time maker to be able to fill orders with relative speed. If you are a builder but have a regular job then it just takes much more time to deliver.

Now you say what is relative speed? Let me say that for the maker you have many steps that take place; create a head either by carving ( takes much time ) or casting, fabricate the head stick, make the mouth palate, install eyes ( some make their own eyes and this takes more time ), install mechanics and the time factor grows with the amount of mechanics, paint the head, wig the head, build the body, make fabric arms and legs, attach hands ( carved wood takes much more time ) paint hands and finally dress the figure. I must admit that the process is long and time consuming and as I originally stated there are very few who you can go to now to purchase a figure fromthat does all these steps as a full time job.

I have to say in my initial blog I said that Albert Alfaro disappears and then reappears before ConVENTion and then is at ConVENTion with a full table. This caused him to receive a few emails from some folks so I hope that I caused him to get a few orders. He is still available for anyone who wants to contact him for a figure. I say this because he contacted me and told me so. I am sorry Albert I just have not heard much about your figures in the public eye .

I have had some comments covering the fact that there are makers out there that are building on their own and I will agree that is a true statement but the blog I wrote was about full time figure builders and where are they. We all can contact Braylu and purchase everything we need to assemble a conversion figure but I was not talking about that at all. I think Braylu is a wonderful site for all of us to get parts and even completed figures from and I myself have used Buzz from Braylu to get items for some of my figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection. A great place for all of us in ventriloquism.

I hope I have explained myself and everyone understands my thoughts which still remain the same I feel it is difficult today to purchase a Professional ventriloquist figure from a Professional builder. There are very few and they take a lot of time.

Humidity and the Ventriloquist Figure

ventriloquist-central-partial-collection

If you keep ventriloquist figures on display I have wondered about humidity levels and where they should be kept. I think about this because for the most part the figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection are wood and with the changes in the seasons there is movement of wood. Movement being expansion and contraction of the wood.

I have had Jazz guitars almost all my adult life and during the winter months I have used a humidifier to help keep the wood from moving and causing cracks. It seems to have worked because I myself have never had any of my guitars crack. I have seen many that have had a cracking problem so I thought the humidifier was the best way to go.

Now that there are so many figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection I have again begun to wonder about cracking. Most of the figures in the collection are of significant age and therefore movement of the wood should have already taken place if it was going to happen. I check the figures frequently, each one individually, to make sure that the mouth movements are smooth and to day I have not found any problems. So I guess the humidifiers going during the cold season works.

Figures that are made of cast material will also move with the change of temperature and PLEASE never put your figure into the trunk of your car during the summer months. The heat is like an oven and will surely cause deformations and may even melt your figures.

Ventriloquist Central Figure Video Collecting Series – A Pinxy Country Bumpkin

A Pinxy Country Bumpkin

Here is a video of a country bumpkin character made by George “Pinxy” Larson. As you can tell from the video, he looks a lot like Mortimer Snerd.

The Tough Guy, Ventriloquist Figure By Conrad Hartz, Re-visited

toughguy-018S

Back in July, I acquired the tough guy ventriloquist figure that was built by Conrad Hartz. I picked him up at last years Vent Haven ConVENTion (for more information about this years ConVENTion, click here).

A couple of months after I posted the blog about this little guy (to see the blog, click here), Conrad Hartz sent me the story about how the “one-eyed” bum came to be. It’s a great story and I wanted to share it with you.

Dan……….The one-eyed bum was never supposed to be. This is one of my earliest carvings. I was carving a rough/tough guy for myself and had ordered what I know was the most beautiful blue hand-blown German eyes. The eyes were the clearest and prettiest hand crafted German eyes I had ever seen. The eyes came in and the day I was to put the in the figure…..was very hot. The shop was not air-conditioned and I was sweating. Anyway, I put the left eye in the head and dropped the perfectly matched right eye onto the cement floor. It shattered into a million pieces. I died a thousand deaths because no two pairs of hand-blown eyes are as perfectly matched as these were. So……I decided to close the right eye permanently and reserve his nose crooked and give him a “stressed” look to say the least. The hands were carved rather massive in style. A Doctor that was a friend of mine from Columbia, SC came down and saw him and immediately fell in love with him. He bought him and the rest is history. Upon his death, he was sold to someone…..somewhere. I’m glad to see him again.

Conrad

It just goes to show that you can make something very nice out of a what could have been a disaster.

Conrad Hartz "Marshallesque" Ventriloquist Figure

marshallesque002

This figure was purchased from Conrad over 20 years ago, put in a storage closet and was never used. He just recently again came out to see the light of day.He stands 40″ tall and came to me undressed so I clothed him in this neat 1950’s outfit.

He has side to side self centering eyes and slot jaw. His paint is all original as is his wig. The control lever is brass unlike the newer levers Mr Hartz makes today. Also the head stick does not yet have the finger grooves the he does today. He has a great smile with exposed teeth with carved dimples in the cheeks very reminiscent of what Frank Marshall did to his figures.

I hope you enjoy seeing this great Hartz figure.
