Cutting Cloths For Ventriloquist Figures

Something that is always on the mind of the ventriloquist while dressing their figure is if they should cut the clothing to accommodate the access to the head stick. This is a common thought and I myself have had to make the choice many times.

I scour the antique clothing stores and internet looking for vintage clothing to dress the figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection. When I find a wonderful vintage suit or suit coat I just can’t bring myself to cut the jacket or suit coat to make access easy. I just slip my hand under . Of course I am not using the figures to perform so it really makes no difference.

William Henry James Shaw Ventriloquist Figure

One of the early Ventriloquist figure Makers in the US was Shaw. He was a mannequin maker and did window displays but he also made vent figures.

I am happy to share with you this very rare wooden figure made by Shaw sometime around the turn of the 20th century. This figure is typical of his work in that it has leather for the mouth and the hands are the stylized carved fingers.

Brian Hamilton Ezry Head

I am a big fan of the late Brian Hamilton and have quite a few of his figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection and I love the fact that he is a direct descendant of the McElroy Brothers. They did teach him some of their methods.

The head casting which I am showing you is a fiberglass cast of a rendition Brian did of the McElroy’s figure Ezry, which was renamed Olie, and Olie is now owned by Jeff Dunham.
