Which do You Like?

Many times I am asked by folks about the length of arms on ventriloquist figures. If you look at early Charlie McCarthy pictures his arms were in proportion to his body but later on Mr Bergen did shorten up the length of the arms. I for one do not really care for the short, out of proportion arms.

For me the correct proportions work best. However, my website partner, Steve, likes the shorter arms.

I thought I would throw this out there and see what the consensus would be with the Ventriloquist community so give me your thoughts.

I have also experimented with my figures’ arm lengths many times. And here’s what I believed:

Short arms look better (at least for me) when the figure sits on a performance stand, like Charlie McCarthy.

Longer arms look better when the figure sits on the vent’s knee, like Danny O’Day.

I agree completely with Ony. When on a stand, arm length to about the bottom of the “butt plate” looks good. On the Vent’s knee, possibly a little longer, but not too long; as the figure then looks like it has “monkey arms”.

  3. Gary Koepke says:

I prefer the finger tips to be just below the seat block of the figure. Any shorter seems to look too short… like a T Rex or something. Of course if you’re manipulating the arms, you probably need them longer.

  4. David Boiano says:

I like what Gary describes for a length, seems like a happy medium between the two so the figure looks whether on a stand or the knee.

  5. Dan says:

I find the short arms very distracting. It looks very unnatural and makes the character seem fake. If anything, slightly longer arms looks better.
