Ventriloquist Central Collection Video Series – Jack Coats Figure

you tube ventriloquist central collection jack coats dummy

Here’s a video of a nice Jack Coats ventriloquist figure (dummy). Jack Coats was a great ventriloquist figure (dummy) maker in the sixties and early seventies. He had a style all his own and he carved them all by hand.

This is a great example of Jack’s work. This fellow has slot jaw, side to side eye movement, winkers/blinkers and a hand shaker.

    Hey Dan,

Thanks for doing this video. Jack was a great guy and figure maker and I can’t go through the Vent Haven without thinking about him.

A few more details. Jack did have a heart attack in 1972, but continued carving until his death in July of 1973, also of a heart attack, a few months before his 42nd birthday. I have a couple heads that were on his bench at the time of his passing and Vent Haven has one in its collection as well.

When I met him in 1970 he was carving 40 figures a year as well as repairs, repaints, etc. I know he continued that rate up until his heart attack in July of 1972 after which he slowed down a bit. So there are probably a couple hundred or so of his figures out there “somewhere.”

Jack was also the first to carve the bird figures similar to what Bill Boley later made (I still have a letter from Bill saying that as well). I had him make me a duck after seeing John Hopman perform with his duck, also made by Jack (although I think John’s wasn’t really a duck bird).

Again, thanks for the wonderful memories!

    Hey Dan,

my Jack Coats figure is my MOST treasured figure, in my collection. Although it’s not original Mike Brose did a superb job restoring it to Jack’s standards.

I wish that somebody would write a book about Jack Coats and other great sculptors including Frank Marshall and their highly special/technical area–ventriloquist figure.
