Fully Loaded mid 1930’s Frank Marshall Ventriloquist Figure

I am pleased to show to you today an unusual Frank Marshall figure which dates from around 1935. This figure is a large figure standing 42″ tall and I do believe this head came from the duplicarver head used by Marshall to create his copies of the Great Lester’s Frank Byron Jr.. These heads were the largest size that Marshall made as far as I know.

This figure is still wearing his original military clothing and you will notice the black legs. These are original and Marshall did this on figures he dressed in outfits that have shorts.

He has the head stick that goes all the way to the bottom board of the body and gives it the 360 degree rotation. He also has slot jaw, upper lip, side moving and self centering eyes, one eye rolling winker, raising eyebrows and a spitter.

When I received the figure his paint was all chipped and falling off and he was bald. I had his paint done by Lee Dunn and I did his wig. I think he looks rather nice.

Very beautiful figure. I don’t see how you find so many Marshall figures. You sure have a knack for it. I suppose figure used rings since no slots for levers.

  2. David Thrasher says:

I was wondering, from the viewpoint of a potential builder of figures, is a 42″ figure the preferred size for a figure to be used professionally?

    • Dan Willinger says:

David most of the figure makers of the golden era made their figure 40″ tall. That was the professional size figure. All the makers offered other sizes as well but I do believe the standrad was 40″.

  3. Philip Grecian says:

Great face. The uptilt nose is subtlely different from anything I’ve seen, and I particularly like the slight overbite. Wig is perfect, Dan.
