Charlie McCarthy in all his Glory

charlie mccarthy in color

Everyone who has any interest at all in ventriloquism today knows who Charlie McCarthy is and if not then they live under a rock and haven’t ventured into the light of day for half a century.

But all kidding aside we all know Charlie but most of us have never seen the early Charlie McCarthy in color. That is because most every picture you find of him is an 8 x 10 photo of which Mr.Bergan took many. They are all black and white. Also the films were all in black and white.

Well last week I happened to find a fabulous color cover of the early (1930s or possibly the original due to the Mack style ears) Charlie McCarthy and said this is a great picture.

I put it in my favorite places to make sure I could buy it. I showed it to my partner Steve Hurst and guess who did me in……yup he bought it (yep I sure did Dan…you snooze you lose…hehehe, Steve).

But that’s OK because he is sharing the picture with us all. Enjoy!!!

    Dan & Steve,

Thanks for sharing this! Wonder what happened to the girl figure. She looks alot like Mortimer. Wonder if Virginia Austin Curis made her too. Most of his films were in color, unless you’re speaking of the vitaphone shorts, which were done in the 30’s also. Thanks again. Great nab Steve!

Love the toss-off comment about Mack-style ears. Never thought of that! More wisdom to save and ponder. And Bill’s query about the girl figure is, to me, the biggest deal about this: Who is she? Where did she come from? What happened to her?
And there’s this: The cover indicates a story inside the magazine. Hmmmm.

The films were NOT all in black and white.

After reading your blog about the 1938 Literary Digest Magazine with Charlie McCarthy on the cover, I was prompted to call my local used magazine store and they just happened to have one on hand. Thanks to your blog I now have the complete Jan. 8, 1938 . Literary Digest Magazine, which is in excellent condition even after 72 years. P.S. I paid $20.00 and yes there is a two page spread inside about Bergan and Charlie with several pictures. Thanks again Dan and Steve. You guys made my day.

Love the picture. One of my biggest thrills was seeing Charlie at the Smithsonian after reading Candice’s account of intalling her “big brother” there.
